Provide evidence-based clinically competent care. To understand God's Thoughts you must study statistics, for these are the measure of his purpose. ~ Florence Nightingale.

Selected Evidence to Meet Outcome This evidence shows my development to giving clinically based competent care. Research is essential to assuring that the interventions performed have been verified through thorough investigation to be effective in improving patient outcomes. My Research paper illustrates the nursing process as we researched a health problem and found studies that would provide evidence based care to the patients. My clinical articles (OB and Med/Surg) illustrate finding actual interventions in the acute care setting and finding research that disputes or coo berates the current practice. My senior care plans and concept maps illustrate my beginning to synthesis the data and apply care that is relevant to the patient and based on current data. ReflectionsMy initial thought was that clinically based competent care was doing what the book says because the book must be accurate. Fortunately I learned that my prerequisites were based on sound knowledge and scientific principles. Chemistry, Biology, and Human Development all gave me the basic knowledge base that gave me the language and sound scientific theory that enshrined me in the practice of supporting evidence through research and experimentation. Another useful class was statistics, which gave me the tools to understand what was being reported in research articles. It was in research that I began to understand different levels of research quality, and how they can apply to my nursing care. The purpose of the research paper was to familiarize myself with the major search databases, such as CINAHL, Medline, and the Cochrane Review in order to find interventions based on random, controlled trials, the gold standard of research. This project did well to assist me in the theory of research, and to begin to incorporate evidence based data into my clinical practice. In later clinicals we utilized research articles in our reflection of our clinical practice, and the research article reflections illustrate how I have begun to think about clinical practice. I am beginning to to critique articles to determine if the interventions are clinically based. Because giving evidence based care occurs along a continuum, at this point I am thinking about interventions, and determining if there is data that supports the current practice. As I reached my senior year, I have attempted to further synthesize my findings and incorporate that into my practice. Using a holistic practice, it is essential for the nurse to look at the patient's overall status, and to adjust my interventions based on the health of the client. At this point I am realizing the principles of evidence based care, but at this point I am not proficient in this skill. With time I hope to gain competence. Future PlansIn this outcome I feel I need further practice providing evidence based clinically competent care. There are certain steps I plan to do to assist furthering my clinical practice. I plan to stay current in the literature by taking continuing education classes, becoming certified in my specialty, and subscribing to nursing journals in my clinical specialty. I plan to develop a rapport with a mentor in my field, especially in my first two years so I may learn to emulate the care given by expert nurses. I plan on staying in my initial environment for at least two years so I may through repetitive practice and experience in a certain clientele develop proficiency. |
EvidenceResearch Paper This research paper looks at a health issue affecting older adults, hypertension, and finds nursing research to find non- pharmacological interventions. OB Clinical Article This article is a descriptive journal discussing the high infant mortality rates of African-Americans and discusses infant care. Senior Med/Surg Research Article This article discusses a research article I discovered that was a review of the literature regarding palliative care of end stage renal disease, and the current best practices. Senior 1 Care Plan This care plan is in conjunction with the concept map, which takes on nursing diagnosis and applies the nursing process to it while determining interventions that are evidence based. Senior Concept Map This concept map illustrates the concept of holistic care and how the data synthesized shows beginning clinical competence. |
