In the tables below, I have provided a summary of the
criteria that will be used to evaluate spreadsheet analyses (all
courses) and system flowcharts and diagrams (BUSA 320).
| Letter grade |
Spreadsheet Analyses |
| A |
Spreadsheets are extremely well organized, calculations are
shown in appropriate detail for the context, formatting is appropriate, and cell
referencing is used throughout. Printing and graphics present a professional
appearance.
|
| B |
Spreadsheets are well organized; organizational problems and
the level of detail for calculations do not detract significantly from
comprehension of the analysis. Formatting is essentially correct, and cell
referencing is used in all but a few instances. Printing and graphics present a
favorable appearance.
|
| C |
Organizational matters and the level of detail for
calculations detract from the reader’s comprehension of the analysis but do
not preclude reader understanding. Formatting may be inconsistent and values are
used in numerous instances where cell referencing would be preferable. Printing
problems may further impair comprehension.
|
| D |
Worksheet is poorly organized and level of detail of
calculations significantly impair reader comprehension of the analysis.
Formatting is haphazard, values are used in place of cell references. Printing
may be poorly organized and graphics poorly done or omitted. |
| E |
Spreadsheet work suggests that either general spreadsheet
skills are weak or that the student did not understand the scope or depth of the
analysis required. Printing problems create and unprofessional appearance.

Flowcharts and Systems Diagrams |
| A |
Flowcharts and diagrams are extremely well organized,
correct shape symbols are used throughout, the level of detail corresponds
to the level of detail in the problem or case, formatting (i.e., size of
symbols, width of lines, font, etc.) are appropriate to the context. Printing and
organization present a professional
appearance. All flows, documents, and processes are included and are correct.
All connectors (on or off page) are clearly marked and linked.
|
| B |
Flowcharts and diagrams are well organized; organizational problems and
the level of detail do not detract significantly from
comprehension of the analysis. Correct shape symbols are used throughout. Formatting is essentially
appropriate in all but a few instances. Printing and graphics present a
favorable appearance. Most flows, documents, and processes are included.
Omissions or errors are noticeable, but do not represent a major
proportion of the total process. All connectors (on or off page) are
clearly marked and linked.
|
| C |
Organizational matters and the level of
detail begin to detract from the reader’s comprehension of the analysis
but do not preclude reader understanding. Formatting may be inconsistent
and/or inappropriate to the context. There may be limited errors in shape
symbol usage. Printing problems may further impair comprehension.
Significant omissions and errors make interpretation of the diagram
difficult. On or off page connectors may be missing or lack follow
through.
|
| D |
Flowcharts and diagrams are poorly organized;
an inappropriate level of detail significantly impairs reader comprehension of the analysis.
Formatting is haphazard. Incorrect shape symbols, errors and/or omissions of
processes significantly impair comprehension. Printing
may be poorly organized. Missing connectors makes it difficult to link pages (or
sections of pages). |
| E |
Flowcharts and/or diagrams suggest that either general
flowcharting
skills are weak or that the student did not understand the scope or depth of the
analysis required. Printing and/or formatting problems create and unprofessional appearance.
Major omissions or errors in flows indicate a lack of understanding of the
process(es) being analyzed or a lack of understanding of the procedure
required to create a systems diagram from the written text.

MS Access Database assignments |
| A |
Tables are in 3NF. There are no update [changes
required in multiple tables], delete [unintentional removal of data] or
insertion [inability to add a record to one because another table cannot
be updated] anomalies. Internal controls [data entry, field size,
formats, etc.] have been built into fields as appropriate to the
situation. Queries work as they are intended to. Reports are well
organized and formatted. Forms are intuitively organized and easily
completed. Auto complete menus and other devices are incorporated as
appropriate to the situation. |
| B |
Tables are in 3NF. There are no update [changes
required in multiple tables], delete [unintentional removal of data] or
insertion [inability to add a record to one because another table cannot
be updated] anomalies. Most internal controls [data entry, field size,
formats, etc.] are present. Queries work as they are intended to with
minor exceptions. Forms work as intended; auto complete menus and other
devices may have been omitted, but their absence does not materially
detract from the functionality of the database. Problems with
organization and formatting of reports do not inhibit reader
understanding. |
| C |
More serious problems become evident. Tables may not
be in 3NF. Internal controls may be missing or inappropriate to the
context. Queries may not function as intended. Reports are adequate, but
organization and/or formatting begin to intrude on the usefulness of the
database. Forms are poorly laid out; auto complete menus are absent. |
| D |
Tables are not in 3NF. Queries may not work. Forms
are poorly organized, making data entry awkward or subject to errors.
Internal controls are missing. Reports are poorly organized; managerial
usefulness of reports may be limited because of difficulties in
interpretation. Overall work shows a lack of familiarity with the
capabilities of the software. |
| E |
Work is poorly organized, Tables are not in 3NF.
Queries do not work or provide inaccurate results. Forms are poorly
organized or missing. Reports are hard to interpret, contain errors, or
are missing. Internal controls are missing or do not work correctly.
Overall work shows a significant lack of familiarity with the
capabilities of the software. |
