Measuring Change & Innvation

Measurements:

There are two aspects of measurements of change

  1. understanding and knowledge of the change process, and
  2. demonstration and operationalizing the change process

Their are a number of courses in the school of business which deal with the change process in individuals and/or organizations in some fashion. They are:

BUSA 301 Managing Careers and Human Resources

BUSA 305 Creating and Leading Effective Organizations

BUSA 445 Quality improvement Strategies

BUSA 490 Strategic Management

BUSA 505 Managing Effective Organizations

BUSA 541 Managing Innovation and Technology Change

BUSA 542 Management of Change

BUSA 590 Technology Strategy/Competitiveness

The understanding and knowledge part of the competencies can be obtained from the above courses with some limited opportunity to demonstrate the ability to be a change agent in an organization. The students ability to be a change agent in an organization can be measured by a combination of both classroom and outside activities. Specific activities could include the following:

Class activities

bulletspecial project in working with companies to solve particular problems
bulletcases
bulletsimulations
bulletrole playing

Outside activities

bulletinternships
bulletschool clubs
bulletcommunity service
bulletvolunteer
bulletprofessional organizations
bulletother organizations

Students could illustrate their experience as a change agent in their digital portfolio. Students should be able to show their understanding, knowledge, and demonstrate thru classroom and/or outside activities some of the of the following:

bulletProposing new visions and show the means to achieve the new vision
bulletMake mid-course corrections
bulletCommunicating the change vision
bulletMotivating others, or personally motivated to change measured by team participation
bulletIdentify external activities and leadership roles in change
bulletParticipation in change through unique internship categories
bulletMake people and structural changes
bulletIdentify required course corrections and follow-on interventions
bulletDevelop a compelling case for change
bulletDevelop incentives for change
bulletEmpowering others to lead and assist in change
bulletDevelop methods to deal with resistance and anxiety associated with change
bulletDesign approaches to realignment of tasks, people, culture, and formal structure
bulletEstablish measures for tracking change
bulletDevelop a transformation plan for change
bulletEstablishing a sense of urgency for change
bulletGetting rid of obstacles for change
bulletEncouraging risk taking and nontraditional ideas, activities, and actions
bulletDevelop ways to recognizing and rewarding people that support change
bulletArticulate the connections between new behaviors and organizational success

Other measurements would be to have students take include the following

bulletChange Style Indicator assessment
bulletMeyer Briggs for personal inventory

In considering the various competencies that are supported by the School of Business for their students to develop, it seems that there are distinctions between the five competencies (Leadership, Communication, Team Effectiveness, Critical Thinking, and Managing Change) -- especially when attempting to assess/measure student outcomes for them. Initially, the School of Business had a configuration that placed 5 competencies on a pentagon -- with Global Awareness, Mastery of Technology, and Knowledge of the Business Disciplines as being infused or integrated or underlying those 5.  In addition, these were based on a foundation of Values (ethics, professionalism, quality, service, etc.).

Perhaps a more appropriate configuration could be made for our assessment process of evaluating student learning outcomes. This would be a triad of 3 broad competency areas ... Communication, Critical Thinking, and Team Effectiveness. This triad rests on an underlying foundation of Values (ethics, professionalism, etc.) Mastery of Technology and Business Disciplines. In addition, students need to develop the competencies of Managing Change,
Global Awareness, and Leadership

This reconfiguration includes ALL of the earlier supported skills and competencies.  However, what is changed is the layering of these competencies into groupings that are more related in assessment techniques that might be appropriate. The 3 areas of the triad (Critical Thinking, Communication, and Team Effectiveness would be more likely to be found throughout a student's School of Business program, as would the 3 underlying foundation areas (Mastery of Technology, Values, and Business Disciplines). The 3 additional competencies (Leadership, Managing Change and Global Awareness), would be found in more circumscribed areas (measured more by outside activities) of the School of Business program.  More likely, they would be exemplified by internships, extracurricular activities, club/organization leadership positions, study abroad programs, etc.

We feel that this new conceptualization will help us in our efforts to measure student learning outcomes.....whether that is done in the digitized portfolio (which we support) or in other manifestations of student learning and progress.
