Professionalism:
requires that one adhere to
the high behavioral standards, education, training and performance of
one’s business profession
Professionalism encompasses a variety of traits
and characteristics. While some professions (e.g., law, medicine, public
accounting) have highly specific professional codes to which members must
adhere, many of the behaviors and traits embodied in these codes are generally
applicable to all professions:
 | Altruism--the willingness to work for the common good rather than in one's
own interest |
 | Responsibility and accountability--acknowledges one's responsibility for
outcomes both good and bad |
 | Leadership |
 | Communication |
 | Aspiration to high standards of personal performance and
character |
 | Excellence and scholarship--professionalism requires continuing education
to maintain competence, especially in the context of a rapidly changing
environment |
 | Respect--professionals recognize and acknowledge the competence of others,
respect the need for confidentiality, and adhere to procedures and protocols |
 | Honor and Integrity--professionalism requires honesty, open and unbiased
communication, and commitment to the good of the larger organization, even
when there may be personal professional risk |
