The Paper
Assignment.
Here is a description of the Policy
Papers including the definition of ÒpolicyÓ and the logical organization of
your papers.
Please choose one of the following three topics, and
write a policy paper. Papers are due April 5. Papers must be on time. The syllabus notes some milestones in paper development, and
you must participate in these steps.
1.
Should the US grant the TransCanada permit to
build the Keystone XL pipeline?
2.
Should the US extend to Iran the same trade on
nuclear programs and aid as offered to North Korea?
3.
Should the US put price caps on Òpayday loansÓ
and similar services?
Papers should be 4-6
pages in length (900-1500 words), and will be evaluated with the following
criteria in mind:

Apply
the logic of policy analysis used in POLS 151
á
Establish
a clear focus and thesis for the essay
á
Introduction
is detailed, not overly general
á
Other
course material effectively used to situate argument
á
Body
paragraphs focused on clear arguments / interpretive claims (have a clear
purpose for each paragraph; when discussing evidence avoid mere summary)
á
Arguments
are supported and developed by evidence
á
Choice
and discussion of evidence persuasively addressed complexity of topic under discussion
á
Actively
discuss / interpret cited evidence
á
Use
any of the recognized systems of reference, just make sure you faithfully
follow it. Your writing handbook
will have details.
á
Papers
will be typed and double-spaced.
á
Quotes,
tables and figures are used economically and integrated smoothly into the prose
á
Writing
is reasonably free of mechanical errors
á
