The Paper Assignment.

Here is a description of the Policy Papers including the definition of ÒpolicyÓ and the logical organization of your papers.

Please choose one of the following three topics, and write a policy paper.  Papers are due April 5.   Papers must be on time.  The syllabus notes some milestones in paper development, and you must participate in these steps.

1.      Should the US grant the TransCanada permit to build the Keystone XL pipeline?

2.      Should the US extend to Iran the same trade on nuclear programs and aid as offered to North Korea?

3.      Should the US put price caps on Òpayday loansÓ and similar services?

Papers should be 4-6 pages in length (900-1500 words), and will be evaluated with the following criteria in mind:

á         Apply the logic of policy analysis used in POLS 151

á         Establish a clear focus and thesis for the essay

á         Introduction is detailed, not overly general

á         Other course material effectively used to situate argument

á         Body paragraphs focused on clear arguments / interpretive claims (have a clear purpose for each paragraph; when discussing evidence avoid mere summary)

á         Arguments are supported and developed by evidence

á         Choice and discussion of evidence persuasively addressed complexity of topic  under discussion

á         Actively discuss / interpret cited evidence

á         Use any of the recognized systems of reference, just make sure you faithfully follow it.  Your writing handbook will have details.

á         Papers will be typed and double-spaced.

á         Quotes, tables and figures are used economically and integrated smoothly into the prose

á         Writing is reasonably free of mechanical errors

á         For help with these criteria see the advice for authors page, including a link to those correction symbols.
