Catalog Description. A survey of the origin and evolution of major political concepts in ancient, medieval, and early modern times. Ideas such as the state, obligation, authority, community, law, and freedom will be studied developmentally.

One purpose of the class is to introduce you to the reading material, which includes many canonical ideas. There are some things college graduates should know, both for content and for making competent criticisms of the content. The ideas in this course have had, and continue to have, consequences for human affairs.

Another purpose of the class, as important as the first, is to develop several skills. College graduates should have highly developed skills in reading, writing, speaking, and thinking critically and logically. These require practice. Activities and exercises are aimed at working on these skills.

Please acquire the following texts:

• Michael L. Morgan, Ed., Classics of Moral and Political Theory, 5th ed. (Hackett, 2011). ISBN = 978-1-60384-442-0
• Peri Roberts and Peter Sutch, An Introduction to Political Thought: Key Concepts and Thinkers (New York University Press, 2004). ISBN = 978-0814775707
• There will also be a few short readings available online or through Sakai.

Coursework.

· Everyone will write a paper on a question to be announced in class. The paper will be from 5 to 7 typical double-spaced pages in length and address themes or concepts found in several authors. Several versions of the paper will be submitted as we attend to different steps of the writing process. (20% of course total)

• Everyone will participate in a debate and discussion that require an understanding of course authors and application of the ideas in class situations. Debaters will bring a written outline of their presentation to class, in propositional form. (10%)
• Everyone will participate in class exercises. You may be assigned to lead us through discussion of some questions about a text, you might be assigned in-class writing exercises, and other activities. (20%)
• A midterm examination(20%).
• A final examination scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2-3:50. (30%)

Reading Schedule

The schedule is announced in class, and is also found on the course web page, along with study questions and items to emphasize for each author. Primary coverage in the course is limited to Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus, Augustine, Machiavelli, Calvin (not in Morgan), Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Rousseau, Kant, Mill, Marx, and Nietzsche, and Weber.
