All PLU full-time, undergraduate students are required to have medical health insurance. The PLU health insurance plan should be considered especially if your health insurance plan does not cover your student, does not offer out of state coverage or has large deductibles.
If your student is graduating, check
here for short term insurance options offered through the Office of Constituent Relations.
Below are a few testimonials from students and parents that have greatly benefitted from the PLU health insurance as well as additional details about coverage provided by the policy.
“As small business owners, we are self insured… we’ve chosen a primary insurance with a high deductible and high co-pays. The PLU insurance will help us with the monthly co-pays we have for our son’s asthma medications, reimbursement for part of ER and urgent care visits. Our compensation from the PLU insurance will far exceed the cost of the policy.” (PLU Parent)
“Having PLU insurance made a difference in my life this year, it reimbursed me 100% for my medications. I do not get insurance through my work, so PLU insurance was my choice.” (PLU Student)
“When our daughter suffered injuries in an accident off-campus, the insurance paid over $2000 in medical bills that weren’t otherwise covered. It was a big relief to us, and the PLU Health Center Staff was especially helpful”. (PLU Parent)
“I would highly encourage you to use PLU's insurance, if you have no other. I recently had a health crisis and if it were not for PLU insurance I would have had to drop out my senior year. But with the insurance I was able to be diagnosed and treated with little cost to me, and will graduate.” (PLU Student)
The PLU plan does supply coverage up to $1000 for each out-patient diagnosis, including prescriptions; however it is not a major medical plan. PLU does offer buy-up options for major medical coverage. You may view the policy
here. If purchased in addition to private insurance, the PLU policy will be secondary to the primary (family) insurance. This means that deductibles and co-pays are covered by the PLU plan. For some of our students this “excess” coverage has paid for the cost of our plan.
If you and your student decide not to enroll in the PLU Health Insurance plan, you must waive-out by providing proof of adequate private insurance. The waive-out period for Fall Term 09 is April 13-September 21, 2009. You may waive out
