New Student Checklist

Welcome to Pacific Lutheran University!  This resource page contains details associated with registration at PLU. Each section reflects important information and requirements you, and your student, may have already completed or need to complete.

If you do not complete the requirements regarding medical history records, immunizations, official transcripts, Payment Contracts, or financial aid, the University will place a HOLD(s) on your student’s account. The HOLD(s) will restrict your student from certain University privileges, including the right to be registered or to continue enrollment.

ePass
Has your student created their ePass (PLU email)? It’s easy to create, just follow the directions here

Did you know the primary means of communication for faculty and staff is utilizing students’ PLU email?

Did you know your student can forward their PLU email to an established personal email?

LuteCard
Has your student obtained their LuteCard (ID Card) at the Concierge Desk? It is located just inside the main entrance to the University Center.  They can also obtain a Lute Card by visiting campus after registering for classes or once arriving for Orientation Weekend!

Does your student know their PLU ID Number and PIN (Personal Identification Number)?

Did you know it is your student’s responsibility to give their PLU ID# and PIN to any spouse/parent/significant other they want to have access to their financial aid and student account information? Without both identification numbers, information cannot be released.

Vehicle Information
Did you know to park in the university parking lots, student vehicles must be registered with Campus Safety? Your student can register for a designated parking lot online at online in early August!  To avoid being ticketed, they must comply with the Vehicle Parking Regulations found here.

Health Forms
Has your student turned in their Medical History Record and gotten up to date with immunizations?

Questions? Contact the Student Health Center at 253-535-7337.

A student should carry their Health Insurance Card with them at all times while attending PLU and be sure the university has an emergency phone number and the appropriate contact person listed.

Required Health Insurance
Did you know your student is required to have health insurance while they attend PLU as a full-time student? Did you also know your student is automatically enrolled in the $400 annual PLU plan every year? Each year you must fill out an online waiver to opt your student out of the PLU plan. This year’s deadline is September 21st at midnight! Please visit the eiia website to waive the student insurance.

A.W.G.Dewar Tuition Refund Plan
Has your student considered the optional A.W.G. Dewar Tuition Refund plan?

In the event of an emergency (such as personal injury, illness, or psychological distress), and if a full withdrawal from PLU is medically necessary, this plan covers tuition, room and meals.

To apply or get more information, your student can visit http://www.collegerefund.com/. At the menu, select Pacific Lutheran University. You can also contact the Office of Student Life at 253-535-7191.

Housing Contracts and Meal Plans
First year students who will be living on-campus are required to sign a Housing Contract and Meal Plan.  When students electronically sign a housing contract, they are automatically signed up for The Lute Choice meal plan. It offers approximately 3 meals a day. If that’s okay with your student - they're set! If your student would like to choose from one of the other options, they'll also need to complete a 2009-2010 Optional Meal Plan Contract. Warn your student to read these contracts carefully before submitting them, they include deadlines for changing or canceling meal plans.

Transcripts
Has your student sent PLU their final Official High School Transcript with their final grades and their graduation date? Has your student sent PLU all official transcripts from other colleges/universities they have attended?

Registration and Deadlines
Do you know that once your student has initially registered for classes, and decides to rearrange their schedule, they should check with their Summer Registration Counselor, Academic Advisor or the Academic Advising Office for assistance?

Verification of Enrollment
Did you know that the Student Services Center verifies enrollment and sends requests for medical insurance, auto insurance and military dependence information to your student’s providers?

Contact Patty Sunderland at 253-535-8029

Veteran’s Assistance
Did you know that the Student Services Center has a counselor available for veteran’s assistance?

Residential students will receive a planner during move-in. New off-campus students will receive a planner during orientation or they can get a copy in the Student Services Center (Hauge Administration Building), Student Involvement and Leadership (UC 161) or ASPLU (UC 140) on or after September 8th.

Payment Contracts
Did your student sign and return their 2009-2010 Payment Contract? If they need to submit a copy, they can visit here.

If your student selected the Monthly Payment Plan, did they contact Tuition Management Services to set up payments?  If they selected Payment in Full, does your student know their payment is due on August 25, 2009?

If your student selected Financial Aid and Other Resources Cover Costs Plan, do they know they are responsible for their financial aid and other resources being applied to their account by September 30, 2009 for the Fall semester?

If your student’s outside scholarships require a Verification of Enrollment, please contact Barb Zettel at zettelbl@plu.edu.

If your student accepted a Perkins or a Nursing Loan, they will receive an email from the Perkins/Nursing Loan Office in August explaining the requirements and how to sign electronically for the loan.

If your student was awarded a Washington State Need Grant or an Educational Opportunity Grant, did they sign the Student Directive? Click on Student Directive for Disbursement of State Aid here.

Refunds
Refund Request Forms can be downloaded here or your student can come into the Student Services Center. Processing for student account refunds begins after the 10th day of classes and continues throughout the semester.

Due to the heavy volume of requests at the beginning of each semester, your student should keep themselves financially prepared until your refund is processed.

If a student has a Parent Loan (PLUS) on their financial aid award, the parent borrowing the loan must also sign the form.

Student Employment/Career Development
Is your student interested in a campus job? Job postings can be viewed online at Student Employment!

There are forms that need to be completed prior to employment. The Federal I-9 Form with original identification (see form for details) must be presented to the employer and a Federal W-4 Form to indicate the amount of estimated taxes to be withheld from each paycheck.

Does your student know there are off-campus positions available in the community under the State Work Study Program?
