Safety at PLU
Despite headlines about violence at or near universities across the U.S., they remain statistically some of the safest places to live and study. One main reason is that they are communities in which people look out for one another. This is certainly true at PLU. A major partner of the PLU community is the Campus Safety Department. Campus Safety is staffed by a trained team of students and professionals. Working closely with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and Central Pierce Fire and Rescue for emergency responses Campus Safety is an integral part of a comprehensive safety plan at PLU.
However, there are three additional simple steps your student should take to prepare for an emergency on campus or in their neighborhood. First, they should purchase or prepare an emergency kit to have in their on or off-campus housing. Second, they should know what to expect and what to do at PLU during various types of emergencies. Third, they should make a communication plan with you (their family) when traditional communication is not possible.
Students may purchase an emergency kit at the Garfield Book Company at PLU. Or, for help in preparing your own kit, go to
ready.gov or the
Washington Military Department. Students should practice by carrying their kits during evacuation drills.
You and your student may also sign up to receive emergency text messages
online. Emergency text messages will describe the emergency, suggest a course of action and refer you to other sources of information. It’s simple: Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed.
The PLU Campus Safety Department provides several services to help keep students safe, as well, including:
- Twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week patrol on campus
- On campus walking escorts 24/7
- Escort/Shuttle rides 24/7 to areas within the PLU perimeter
- Emergency First Aid response
- Video surveillance of parking lots 24/7
- Vehicle jump starts
The Director of Campus Safety is a Detective Sergeant with the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department who not only runs Campus Safety but acts at a daily liaison and has direct communication with the Sheriff’s Department. For more information about what Campus Safety does please visit their
