Greetings from campus! While summer provided a great rest from the daily routine and madness of college life, it is fantastic to have everyone around, have classes in full swing and already feel the stress of the semester looming in our minds.
The opening of the school year is always a very ceremonious time and we want to share a few of our reflections on the opening of the year as it means for us.
ANDY
My three years at PLU have gone by so quickly and taught me so much about the world, helped me discover new values that I have gained through my different experiences and also shown me which values I still hold true.
I had the great privilege of welcoming my sister Katy to PLU as a first-year student this year. It was inspiring and also bitter sweet to watch her begin her college career; inspiring because she has taken the experience by storm and bittersweet knowing that it is my last, first day of school. It was interesting watching students move in to the dorms, and while I enjoy living off campus this year, there is something challenging in knowing that I will not experience dorm life again.
The synergy on campus is exciting and I am confident it will be a great year!
MAREN
I have always loved the first day of school; I always feel a great sense of pride walking to the first class of the new year, anxiously anticipating all the knowledge I will gain in the year. Like Andy, it was sad to experience the last first day of school knowing that so much time has passed and we passed in to the ranks of senior.
The most interesting part of becoming a senior, for me, has been the shift in perspective over the last three weeks. College is a glorious time of life because we have the opportunity to dedicate four years to the development of ourselves. However, before the school year started I found myself in a bit of a slump, dreading the responsibilities that awaited me in the school year. But, after some reflection (and some pouting) I realized that the role of a senior at PLU is not to focus on the self anymore, rather it is to be a leader for the next generation of Lutes; it is about service to this community.
We are excited to begin this next phase of our careers at PLU and we will keep you updated on campus happenings through Parent eNews throughout the school year!
