A little about me...

friendsBorn and raised in Germany, I eventually migrated with my parents to Washington state.  I began my post-high school education at Pierce College, at which point I decided to pursue a career in nursing.  I chose Pacific Lutheran University for its outstanding academic reputation.  I have had wonderful experiences so far in the program and have made excellent new friends.  Teamwork is very important throughout the nursing program, as it will be for the remainder of my future nursing career.  I hope to combine my two passions, traveling and nursing, after I graduate from PLU School of Nursing in December 2009.

Defining Nursing

I am inspired by the definition of nursing from the American Nurses Association, which states, "Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations."

Nursing Philosphy

I am inspired by Pacific Lutheran University's School of Nursing Philosphy. This philosophy encompasses nursing, persons, environment, health and education.
» Nursing is a profession that involves caring, compassion and
knowledge. Nurses need to care for the patient's best interests to achieve the best outcomes.
» Persons are individuals, families and communities. Each of these entities have values, morals and worth and should be cared for as such.
» Environment is that in which we live. It's physical, social, cultural and even spiritual. My environment includes the city in which I live, the school I attend, the faith I practice, and my German cultural background.
» Health is well-being. Everyone deserves quality health care and should be cared for equally. Health should be holistic in nature.
» Education is extremely important in the nursing profession. Not only do nurses need an educational diploma to practice, but it is essential that nurses receive continuing education as there will always be new things to learn.

My Coat of Arms

In Professional Foundations I (N260), I made a Coat of Arms
of values that are important to me. I believe education is crucial and I always strive to gain more knowledge. Teamwork is essential, especially in the nursing field. And one also needs to be aware of the many cultures we may come in contact with to help with proper care. Last but not least, everyone deserves equal time, care and attention.

My Goals

» One year goal: Post-graduation, I hope to work in a local area hospital on a medical-surgical floor. I believe that in this setting I will be able to learn about numerous disease processes, nursing practices and procedures, and time management and prioritization. I also hope to advance from beginner to novice.

» Five year goal: I aspire to work as a critical care nurse. I am hoping that after one or two years of medical surgical experience I am competent and confident enough to advance to the intensive care unit. Subsequently, I would also like to receive certification as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN).

» Infinity and beyond: I do hope to gain expertise and confidence throughout my nursing career to become that excellent nurse. I do still hope to work as a traveling nurse once I get on my feet and feel comfortable enough in my abilities as a practicing nurse. I also hope to precept my own students and lend my knowledge and know-how to others.

» Sophomore goal: As a sophomore, my goal was to maintain a 3.5 GPA throughout the nursing program and remain in high academic standing. Goal met: I received the Dean's List honors for four semesters and am also a member Sigma Theta Tau (National Honor Society of Nursing).
