Why take the challenge?

soundoff1   240x180   16KIt's all about you. Seriously. At Pacific Lutheran University, RHA is dedicated to helping you guys save the world. And you can do this by changing your habits--by doing things daily, weekly, and even by doing simple one-time things. All of these can cause great change to not only our PLU community, but to the entire world. So will you take the challenge? All it takes is filling out a simple form, doing a survey, and then doing a few things every week to lower your impact on the globe. This will also earn you points for your hall for the hall competition that will be occuring during homecoming week! Points can only be earned if you fill out the sign-up form and take the initial survey before September 15th.  Questions? E-mail Eric Pfaff, pfaffet@plu.edu.

The Six Weeks

September 3, 2007 - September 8, 2007

Before the Challenge

Initial Sign-up stage. Sign up during this time to take part in the full challenge, and also get points for your residence hall for the RHA Homecoming Week Challenge!

September 9, 2007- September 15, 2007
Transportation
A week focusing on how you get around, whether it's campus or the city of Tacoma. This would be a great week to focus specifically on changing some transportation habits.

September 16, 2007 - September 22, 2007
Food
A week focusing on what you eat, where it comes from and what it took to produce. This would be a great week to focus specifically on changing some eating habits.

September 23, 2007 - September 29, 2007
Waste
A week focusing on everything you throw away. It's more than you probably think, and it adds up. This would be a great week to focus specifically on changing some habits in regards to the 4R's--reducing, reusing, recycling and rotting (or composting).

September 30, 2007 - October 6, 2007
Water and Electricity

A week focusing two important things: water and electricity. (Most people get electricity from water power, too!) It might rain a lot here, but guess what? Fresh water shouldn't be taken lightly. Also, learn how to easily not waste electricity! You'll be suprised at how easy it is to save electricity (and to waste it)! This would be a great week to focus specifically on turning things off!

October 7, 2007 - October 13, 2007
The Final Week

It's Homecoming Week, and time to put all of this together. Not only did you earn some points for your hall, but you also took a look at your self and what you might do to help the world become a better place.

So how many leaves did you earn?

Sign up now!

Sign up online to take the challenge! Just fill out this quick form, and you'll be on your way to seeing how green you are.
Then take the survey. It'll take ten or fifteen minutes, but it will give you a good idea of where you are right now on the path to being more sustainable.
Finally, save this document to your computer. It will help you record your progress through the challenge. Because, during these six weeks, the whole point is to make some change. The document even comes with some simple ideas of what you can do every week!

The Five Leaves

Transportation: Do you drive from T-Stad to the Admin. building for class? Do you ride your bike to get groceries? Did you know that there is an express bus to Seattle? This leaf will look at your ways of getting around.
Food: Where does your food come from before it gets to the UC, or that extra storage bin underneath your desk? Is it organic? Is it locally produced or grown? This leaf will make you think about your food--after all, you are what you eat.
Waste: Why do you use a paper towel in the bathroom, when you could go back to your room and use a cloth towel? Why do you recycle in the first place? This leaf will look at everything you waste in a day. It may suprise you!
Water: How long are your showers? Do you brush your teeth with the water running? Water is essential in many more things that we do and use in our daily lives. This leaf will look at water usage, whether obvious or more hidden.
Electricity: Do you keep your lights on and a mini-fridge running with only one apple in it? This leaf looks at how much energy you're actually using.
