History Websites

Here are a few of my favorite History websites. First is H-Net. On H-Net you may join list-serv groups focused on everything from Native American History, Environmental and Western America, to the history of stained glass (not a particular interest of mine, but somehow worth noting), or the history of Southern music (a subject of great interest and passion for me). I enjoy the journals and conferences of two organizations, particularly: the American Society for Environmental History (ASEH) and the Western History Association (WHA). For general news about the profession, check out the History News Network. I have found that the profiles there of young historians are especially interesting. I once imagined being interviewed by Charlie Rose, now I am simply content with dreams of making HNN's list. I find the following websites useful and fun on a regular basis: The University of Virginia's page with links to numerous great History sites is excellent. Speaking of Virginia, Edward Ayers's (eminent historian, now president of the University of Richmond) Civil War site, The Valley of the Shadow, is fabulous. Finally, the Library of Congress American Memory site can distract the most diligent among us for hours on end. Chances are good that if you are reading this in the first place, the LOC site will consume the better part of the rest of your day. Enjoy.
