Safety Training

Safety Training

Specific training may often be required for employees who are exposed to specific risks. You may use the Safety Training Checklist as a tool to determine what kind of training you require and to track completion in each training topic. You may also wish to use the Personal Protective Equipment form and Chemical Training form to document and track training for each employee.

The university provides training on various topics presented by both PLU employees and contracted trainers. Please refer to the safety training schedule for a description of classes and to register for university-provided training.

Supervisors may need to seek safety training opportunities outside of the university for employees with unique exposures. Supervisors should also provide a safety orientation for employees and training on such topics as use of personal protective equipment and operation of new equipment. Contact Environmental Health & Safety for assistance in finding training.

SHARPEN UP ON BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS AND INFECTIOUS WASTE

An annual refresher class is also offered for anyone who has already been through the bloodborne pathogens class.

Required for Cleaning Services, Biology Department, Medical Response, and Health Care workers within 10 days of employment-related exposure to potentially infectious materials.

Recommended for Emergency Building Coordinators, Plant Services personnel, and Campus Safety personnel.

STAYING ALIVE (FIRST AID & CPR)

FORKLIFT SAFETY

Driving a forklift is tricky business. PLU forklift training includes classroom instruction on the physical principles of safe forklift operation and hands-on personal instruction until each student can demonstrate skilled operation. Only those who have been pre-approved may attend.

BE SMART AND BEWARE: CHEMICAL SAFETY

Have you heard the term "MSDS"? This class will introduce you to the Material Safety Data Sheet. Understanding the MSDS is your key to understanding the hazards of the chemical products that you work with and how to protect yourself from being injured while at work.

The Hazard Communication regulations comprise the most frequently cited violation of safety law by Occupational Safety & Health Officers. Please protect your employees and ensure your department's compliance with this regulation.

This is a general instruction course. Supervisors are still expected to train employees specifically to use the products within their department. Required for all employees who are exposed to hazardous products in the workplace and their supervisors, including, but not limited to, Natural Sciences, Plant Services, Art Department, University Printing, and Dining Services.

STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT! (LIFTING AND MATERIALS HANDLING)

Back injuries and other cumulative trauma disorders are one of the most prevalent injuries sustained by workers. They are also some of the most costly injuries for employers to compensate.

Learn how to reduce your potential for injury through a better understanding of how the body works, stretches that increase the capacity for the body to respond to physical stresses, and proper techniques for moving materials.

All employees are welcome. Required for Plant Services, Conferences and Events, Stage Services, University Printing & Warehouse, Dining Services, Bookstore, and other employees that move materials.

ERGONOMICS

Like back injuries, carpal tunnel, tendonitis and other cumulative trauma disorders develop over time. Learn how to identify risk factors for developing one of these illnesses and how to control those risks in your own work environment. Recommended for all employees.

*If you think you might need an ergonomic assessment, please call Joe Bell at x7233, or e-mail bellje@plu.edu.

CLIMBING THE LADDER

Ladders are commonly used and misused. This class will show you how to use a ladder safely even for those awkward, uneven situations. Provided by Jim Sims, Labor and Industries Safety Consultant.

Recommended for Maintenance, Grounds, Media Services, Computing and Telecommunications, and others who use ladders.

Required for individuals in Facilities Management and PLU health care employees. You are not permitted to wear a respirator without this training.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AT PLU

What is going on behind the scenes when an event strikes PLU? What should you do during an emergency? How can you prepare for an earthquake, fire, or plane crash?

The Environmental Health & Safety Manager will come to you. This can be a 10-minute overview for your office, school, or department at a staff or faculty meeting.

RADIATION

Required for Maintenance, Custodial, Campus Safety and Natural Sciences staff that may work around radioactive materials. A more in-depth training is also required for faculty and students authorized to handle radioactive materials. Contact the Radiation Safety Officer at x6181.

SAFE AND SOUND SUPERVISION

If you supervise or lead other PLU employees, you must also wear the white safety hat. Supervisors are responsible for ensuring that employees are trained in safe work practices. They must also enforce PLU safety policies and regulatory requirements. This can be overwhelming. Get a grip on your safety responsibility as a supervisor with this introductory course in safety at PLU.

In addition, supervisors must attend specific training courses that are required for employees.
