Welcome to PLU's Department of
Languages and Literatures! An understanding of world cultures and an
ability to speak languages other than one's own are hallmarks of
today's college graduate and of a successful career person.
the language benefit
Language
study at PLU is a serious academic enterprise. While gaining
proficiency in a language, students develop critical, aesthetic, and
creative sensibilities necessary for global citizenship along with an
appreciation for their own language and culture.
PLU's International Advantage
Language students are strongly encouraged to participate in the
numerous study abroad courses offered through PLU's own Wang Center for
International Programs. Students can develop language and cultural
skills while travelling abroad or studying at universities overseas.
Say What?
Although English speakers are found worldwide on every continent, they're far from the majority. In fact, The 2004 NY Times Almanac
estimates that roughly two-thirds of the world population cannot speak
English-- that's 4 billion people! What languages other than English
can you speak?
