The Council

Executive Board


The Executive Board consists of the following: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Outreach Group Coordinator, Activities Group Coordinator and the immediate Past President, who also serves as the Services Group Coordinator. The SCC Director, the Chair of the Scandinavian Studies Program, the Curator of the Scandinavian Immigrant Experience Collection, and the Representative from PLU's Development Office serve as ex officio members. The Executive Board conducts the business of the Cultural Council between its business meetings, fixes the hour and place of meetings, authorizes expenditures, and makes recommendations to the Cultural Council for action.

Cultural Council


The Cultural Council consists of the members of the Executive Board, standing committee chairs and co-chairs, at least one person of Nordic heritage to represent each of the five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden). The Cultural Council meets monthly to plan and organize events and exhibits sponsored by the Cultural Center.

SCC Director - Susan Young


Young
As Director, Susan overseas the planning and implementation of events and activities of the SCC; works with the Treasurer to maintain accurate accounts of income and expenditures related to the Council; serves as liaison between local Nordic groups, museums, foundations and other Nordic organizations; oversees the coordination and ongoing development of the membership organization; provides supervision, training and coordination of office assistants and volunteers; serves as curator of artifacts; and serves as Editor of the Center's bimonthly newsletter.

Susan is a graduate of PLU where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. She and her husband Ben moved to the Tacoma area in 1980 following Ben’s retirement from the military. Their son (Stephen) and daughter-in-law (Jessica) are also PLU graduates.


President - Lisa Ottoson


Lisa M Ottoson
As President, Lisa presides at meetings of the Executive Board and the Cultural Council and performs such duties as ordinarily pertain to the office.  She works with the Director in overseeing the planning of the activities of the SCC..

Lisa is an alumna of PLU.  She joined the Sandinavian Cultural Council in 2004.  Lisa greatly values her Scandinavian heritage, so in addition to being a member of the SCC, she is Secretary for Daughters of Norway, Embla Lodge #2.  She also served PLU as President of the Alumni Board.  Currently, she is a relationship manager for The Threshold Group in Gig Harbor.  She has over eighteen years of experice in wealth mangement and planning, client and financial services.  Prior to joining TTG, Lisa was the Chief Operations Offier for Northwest Computer Support and was also a Client Executive at the Russell Investment Group where she worked for thirteen years.  Lisa holds both the Series 7 an 65 Securities Licenses,and a bachelors degree in Business Administration from PLU.

Secretary - Katrina Jaech



As Secretary, Katrina records the minutes of Executive Board and Council meetings, sends out notices of meetings, and preserves the minutes of such meetings.



Treasurer - Karen Giguere


As Treasurer, Karenb works with the Director in preparing the annual budget, verifies monthly financial reports, and is responsible for the collection of admission fees at SCC events.

Group Coordinators


The Group Coordinators (Services Group, Outreach Group, and Activities Group) maintain close contact with the committee chairs in their group and make monthly reports to the Executive Board.

Advisory Board


The Advisory Board meets on an ad hoc basis to consider matters of management, operation, and capital improvement. The Board consists of the Director of the University Center, the Chair of the Scandinavian Area Studies Program, the SCCC President, the SCC Director, the Dean of Humanities, and up to five members of the Cultural Council
