PLU Scholarship
Since the inception of the South Sound Regional Science Fair Program, Pacific Lutheran University has generously sponsored scholarship awards for the first place winners of each of the High School Division Categories
These are $1000, non-transferable scholarships good toward full-time PLU tuition for qualified students. Each scholarship is renewable for the 4 years of a bachelor's degree program for a potential total value of $4000. The first place team members do not split a scholarship; each member will receive an individual scholarship.
Potential $68,000 in scholarships are available at each South Sound Regional Science Fair!
Elementary/Middle School Division Prizes
Special participation pins and certificates are awarded to all K through 8th grade participants. First place winners receive a certificate and trophy and second, third place and Honorable Mention winners receive ribbons. Participants are also eligible to receive various merchandise awards. Winners in Grades 6-8 are eligible to compete in the Discovery Young Scientists Challenge.
High School Division Prizes
Special participation pins are awarded to all 9th - 12th grade participants. In each category first place winners receive a certificate and trophy and second, third place and Honorable Mention winners receive ribbons. First place winners also receive a $1000 PLU Scholarship good towards full-time PLU tuition and renewable for the four years of a Bachelor's Degree.
Grand Prize Award
The first and second overall individual winners, and the outstanding team (2 person) in Grades 9 - 12 are eligible to receive a trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. This prize includes travel, and hotel accommodations.
For more information on the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, visit the ISEF site at http://www.sciserv.org. Prizes at the International Fair include $3000 for first place, $1500 for second place, $1000 for third place, and $500 for fourth place. A $5000 award goes to each Best in Category winner. Grand Prize winners receive a trip to the Nobel Prize Ceremonies in Stockholm, Sweden plus a $50,000 scholarship to the college or university of their choice.
Top Teacher Award
If funds are available a prize is awarded to the sponsoring teacher of the Top Student winner in the High School Division. The Top Teacher Award includes a plaque and a trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. The trip package includes spending money, travel, and hotel accommodations.
The following specialty prizes (which change slightly from year to year) have been open to the High School Division:
- American Meteorological Society Award - two certificates - best projects in meteorology, oceanography, or atmospheric science
- Association for Women Geoscientists - certificate - for excellence in geosciences
- Eastman Kodak Award - certificate, Kodak camera, and Kodak film - project with most effective use of photography
- Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award - certificate, memento, and $200 - for excellence in computer science
- NACE International - certificate - best environmental science project
- National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - certificate - best project in the field of mathematics
- Society for In Vitro Biology - certificate - for most outstanding 11th grade student exhibiting in the areas of plant or animal in vitro biology or tissue culture
- US Army Awards - certificates - best projects in engineering, environmental science, life sciences, math/computer science, physical sciences
- US Department of Health and Human Services / US Public Health Service - certificate - best anti-smoking or smoke free environment experiment
- US Metric Association Awards - certificate - projects exhibiting the best use of the metric system
- US Navy/Marine Corps Distinguished Achievement Awards - certificate and graphing calculator - four selected outstanding projects
