I. What Does It Mean to Have Learning Disabilities?
A. Learning Disability is a disorder or specific
gap in the ability level or a child’s IQ and his or her Academic
Achievement in some areas.
B. Impairment of Learning Disabilities
1.Language
2.Listening
3.Memory
4.Speaking
5.Conceptualization
6.Academic Skills
7.Motor Skill
II. What Does It Mean to Have ADHD?
A. ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
is referred to as (Neurobiological disorder), It affects Roughly
3-5% of the population. ADHD is a diagnosis applied to children
and adults who consistently display certain characteristic behaviors
over a period of time. The most common core features include:
1.Distractibility, (poor sustained
attention to tasks)
2.Impulsivity (impaired impulse control and delay of gratification)
3.Hyperactivity (excessive activity and physical restlessness)
B. ADHD ranges in severity-The 3 Subtypes:
1.Predominantly Inattentive Type
2.Predominantly Hyperactive – Impulsive Type
3.Combined Type
A person without a hyperactivity
or impulsive is considered to be predominately inattentive and they
don’t have behavioral issues as ADHD. Usually the learning disability
is for this level is a struggle to achieve in school and find it difficult
to sustain attention and work production.
C. Some common symptoms of ADHD include:
1.Often fails to give close attention
to details or makes careless mistakes.
2.Often has difficulty sustaining attention to tasks
3.Often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
4.Often fails to follow instructions carefully and completely
5.Losing or forgetting important things
6.Feeling restless-often fidgety with hands or feet, or squirming,
running or climbing excessively
7.Often talks excessively
8.Often blurts out answers before hearing the whole question
9.Often has difficulty awaiting turn
III. ADHD or ADD What’s the difference?
A. Many people use the term ADD
Attention Deficit Disorder as a generic term for all types of ADHD.
The term ADD has gained popularity in the media, general public
and professionals. Attention Deficit Disorder Association stats
that whether we call I ADD or ADHD we are basically referring to
the same thing.
B. ADD exists on a continuum. Individuals
have more of the symptoms more of the time.
1.Have problems following through
on instructions
2.Problems paying attention appropriately
3.Seem not to listen
4.Have trouble starting tasks that require planning Easily distracted
or forgetful
D. What causes ADD?
ADD is a neurobiological disorder.
The most recent research shows that the symptoms of ADD are caused
by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
IV. What does Research Show?
"Lower level of activity in some parts of the brain may cause inattention
and other ADHD symptoms".
