    • Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that results from insufficient insulin and from disturbances of carbohydrates, protein and fat metabolism.

    • 50% of these 16 million do not know they have it.
    • Diabetes is responsible for 50% of myocardial infarctions and 75% of all strokes.
    • Diabetes is a major cuase of new blindness and a casual factor for amputations.
    • 10% of diabetes are school aged children.
    • Insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is sometimes caused from either genetics or hereditary.
    • Another cause of IDDM is an auto-immune reaction where a virus may affect body cells and the immune system no longer identifies these cells as part of the body.
