... < First-Year Program < Getting Ready < Appropriate Classes > Academic Advising > Special Opportunities > ... There are two important placement tests which most every first-year PLU student should plan on completing either before classes begin in the Fall or soon after classes begin: the Math Placement Exam and the Foreign Language Placement test.
The Math Placement Exam While virtually every incoming student has completed some math in high school, everyone will vary as to which PLU math courses would be appropriate. A placement test and background survey are used to help insure that students begin in mathematics courses which are appropriate to their preparation and abilities. PLU courses which involve doing math calculations are sometimes difficult, even for students who have successfully completed high school math courses. Completing the placement test will help you to know which math course will best fit your current skills. Enrollment is not permitted in any of the beginning mathematics courses (91, 99, 105, 107, 111, 112, 123, 128, 140, 151) until the placement test and background survey are completed. The Math Placement Exam should be completed as soon as possible. You may complete the test online at banweb.plu.edu/pap/hxskmplc.P_MathIntro. You may also request a print version of the test. The Foreign Language Placement Test All PLU students must meet the foreign language entrance requirements. In addition, students who seek a Bachelor of Arts degree must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences language requirement (www.plu.edu/~aadv/faq.html). Unlike the Math Placement Exam, the Foreign Language Placement test is not required. But it is highly recommended so that you can enroll in the appropriate level of the foreign language you intend to study to either major in a language or complete that option of the foreign language requirement. The placement test is available for students enrolled in Spanish, German or French. It does not require advance preparation, as the goal of the test is to determine your skill level at this time. The test, which takes approximately one-half hour to complete, can be completed at the Language Resource Center in Mortvedt Library during the following times: Monday-Friday, 7:30 am-5:00 pm; Saturday, 1-5 pm; or Sunday, 3-7 pm. PLU offers a wide array of language courses. If you are interested in continuing your language study in Latin, Greek, Chinese, or Norwegian, you should contact the Department of Languages (www.plu.edu/~lang or 253-535-7219) for information and assistance regarding the selection of an appropriate language course. ... < First-Year Program < Getting Ready < Appropriate Classes > Academic Advising > Special Opportunities > ... |
