Getting Ready for a Major

Some Major and Pre-Major Requirements

Proficiency Examinations and Music Auditions

Several departments offer proficiency examinations. There is no charge for the testing and the results primarily are used to verify placement in the appropriate level of study.

  • Music: Auditions and registration for ensembles occur during orientation week. Registration for private lessons will also occur after your arrival on campus-pick up eligibility cards in the music office.

PLU's Writing Requirement

The ability to write well is essential for success in college. Therefore, all students are required to take WRIT 101 sometime during their freshman year. Students with advanced placement test scores in English of 3, 4, or 5 will receive four hours of elective English credit. Writing 101 is still required for graduation. Students who have completed an English composition course at a regionally accredited college may be excused, provided they can produce a college transcript for the work.
