Lets Cope

The personality of the person coping influences how he or she will cope with that event. There are 4 different coping personalities.
1. Negativity- As shown by the title, this personality has a negative effect. It is associated with elevated levels of cortisol, and this coping personality shows more illness behaviors as well as distress when the person is sick.
2. Pessimistic Explanatory Style- This personality explains events as there is no hope for change. This personality is also associated with poorer immune function.
3. Hardiness- This personality has a beneficial effect. This personality shows commitment, control, and sees stress as a challenge. They appraise events more favorably and they are more likely to take action against stress.
4. Dispositional Optimism- This personality is also beneficial. This type generally believe things will workout. These types also display a higher self- efficacy.
There are also 4 different coping styles to deal with stress.
1. Avoidant- This style is generally better for acute stressors. May report less stress, probably through denial, because they display the physiological signs and symptoms of having stress.
2. Confrontative- This style usually engages in cognitive and emotional efforts needed to cope long term. This style also usually increases anxiety and emotional reactiveness.
3. Problem Solving- This style attempts to do something constructive. Employed usually for stresses that can be solved or controlled.
4. Emotional- This style attempts to regulate emotional experience. This style is often used for out of control stress, such as health problems
