STRESS N STUFF

Health Effects

Wow an Ulcer

Stress has an effect on a person's immunity. Other problems can occur from chronic stress such as, Digestion problems, ulcers, Irritable bowel syndrome, and stunted growth.

IBS

Immune System- During a stress response, the short term response is a boost in the immune system. If the  stress is prolonged, an autoimmune disease may occur. The body prevents this by slowly  removing immune cells to lower the immune response. Chronic stress might prolong the removing of cells, which would result in the immune system being below normal levels.

During Digestion, the fight or flight response results in a sudden and rapid stimulation of the bowels.  The body may rid itself of unnecessary weight in the colon before water absorption is complete.  This is known as Diarrhea.

Prolonged stress may also lead to Ulcers.  Ulcers are small holes that develop in the lining of the stomach, esophagus, or duodenum.  Ulcers are due to a drop in mucus levels and an increase in stomach acid which occurs after stress.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common stress related disorders.  Some of the symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, cramping, and mucus and blood in the stool.  IBS occurs from poor coordination of the small and large intestine, which results from the overstimulation of the Sympathetic Nervous System.

Chronic Stress also has an effect on the way a person growsStress Dwarfism occurs from extreme exposure to prolonged stress.  If a child is taken out of the stressful environment however, normal growth patterns took place.
