Work
As a yoga instructor at many different institutions, I have experienced a wide range of students in my classes. I am challenged to make proper modifications for a wide range of people because the skill level in any one class may vary greatly. I have learned that as I invite a good challenge, I too like to challenge my students. Sometimes these challenges are met with hesitation or deep apprehensive sighs, but more often than not, those individuals that set aside negative expectations of what they think they cannot do, surprise themselves with great successes. Those moments are priceless both for the student and for me, as their instructor.

As well as teaching to groups with varying skill levels, I have also instructed a wide range of ages--from the young, athletic college students at Pacific Lutheran University to middle-aged office employees at Intel. Don’t get me wrong; my most athletic and hard-working yogis are those at Intel! As an instructor, the differences in my students challenges me to create classes that appease most everyone’s desires.

Teaching at PLU offers a unique opportunity for me; not only am I a yoga instructor, but also I teach a second course entitled Relaxation Techniques. The class combines a shortened yoga practice with the study and practice of relaxation techniques. I encourage the students to incorporate the lessons we practice in class into their daily lives. I’d like to believe that through this class, some lives are influenced. I received extremely positive feedback both on my instruction and on the course material. Going to class twice a week, teaching college students, creating lesson plans applicable to student lives is a highlight in my career thus far. It has opened my eyes as to the direction that I would like to take my yoga and educational instruction.
My success working at the YMCA, Intel, PLU and other gyms, inspired me to start my own business. Stay Bent Yoga, LLC has been active for the past year and my list of active participants continues to grow. I offer instruction twice a week to six individuals at a time, making it a very personal and individualized yoga experience.
Ultimately, I believe that my passion for yoga radiates in my teaching. I love celebrating successes with my students—big or small. It is so rewarding to be on this yoga journey, and I feel blessed to have so many incredible individuals along with me.
