Since the fall of 2001, I have been on the
faculty of Pacific Lutheran University (PLU)
where I am a full professor in the Department of Mathematics. Prior to moving to PLU, I spent fourteen
years at the University of Southern Mississippi
(USM) in
My doctoral training emphasized classical algebra, focusing on the interplay between matrix theory, combinatorics and graph theory. My Ph.D. minor was in linear and integer programming and convex analysis. I completed my Ph.D. in 1986 at the University of Wisconsin under the kind and supportive guidance of Professor Hans Schneider. In the years since completing my Ph.D., I have pursued additional interests in mathematical statistics, actuarial science and finance.
My current academic interests lie in five broad areas: combinatorial matrix theory, graph theory, linear algebra education, statistics, and financial risk modeling.
My nonacademic interests include singing (chamber
music), hiking (
For most of the 1990's, I served as the assistant treasurer for the International Linear Algebra Society (ILAS). For nine years (2000 – 2009), I was the secretary-treasurer of ILAS.
In my spare time, I help my wife home-school the fish in our pond and wrangle the herd of cats that roam our house.
