Service at PLU

I have been involved with Delta Iota Chi since I started nursing school. This organization has provided me with service opportunities like the Thanksgiving Turkey Basket Drive, the Bi-annual Blood Drives at PLU and Relay for Life. Through these service projects I have learned the importance of giving back to not only my community, but communities that I may have no connection to personally. I am also a recent member of SAPET (sexual assault peer education team), which is a PLU organization through the Women's Center that gives presentations to classes at PLU about many aspects of sexual assault. As a member of SAPET I will also be volunteering in the Women's Center for an hour each week. The SAPET training I have received so far has changed my life. It's been amazing to see the parallels between nursing and involvement in an organization such as SAPET; I have broadened my understanding of empathy, advocacy, acceptance and active listening.

Future Service Plans

     I plan to continue being an active member of Delta Iota Chi throughout the next two years here at PLU. I also plan to continue with SAPET and I look forward to being able to present and fuel discussion on a topic that has been hushed by society. My future goals for service at PLU are twofold at this point;I hope to take part in as many service projects as I can while I'm here, and to study away in Trinidad and Tobago for my final J-term and be able to work in their health clinics. After graduation, I hope to work in clinics in developing countries.
