Group Projects

Skydiving Teamwork This semester has involved a large amount of group work. All three of my classes have assigned at least one group project, which has helped bring our cohort together as we are grouped randomly with people that we would not necessarily choose for  ourselves. In Pathophysiology we were assigned a group of three and a neurological disorder to research and present to the class. Our Health Promotion course involves group work each time we meet. We present information to each other and discuss ways to apply the information. Our health promotion teaching project was helpful because it involved working with people outside of our cohort and it's important for us to keep in mind throughout these group projects that we won't always be collaborating with people of similar education and of familiarity to us.  Professional Foundations I has presented us with the most group projects so far. We were placed into groups of seven at the beginning of the semester and have stuck with these groups throughout three significant projects including a topic of historical nursing (Florence Nightingale), a topic on comparing nursing theories (Newman's Theory of Health as Expanding Consciousness and Neuman's Systems Model), and a health care issue (Should food be genetically modified?). The most challenging of these projects has been the genetically modified foods controversy because we had to collaborate our research from different perspectives and writing styles into a ten page paper and present this information to the class. Working in groups and in front of my cohort frequently this semester has helped me to improve my public speaking skills and has shown me that collaboration, communication, accountability and good listening skills are all integral parts of working with groups of people so that when it comes time to present a unified product or conclusion, we can do so without major glitches or feelings of resentment toward group members.

Future Collaboration of Care

In my future nursing courses I will have more opportunities to not only continue to collaborate with my cohort, but with clients as well so that I can meet the care aspect of this objective.

Individual Projects

My experience with my heart failure client thus far has helped to demonstrate my abilities to work by myself in collaboration with a client to aid her in the accomplishment of her goals. We designed a plan for her to be able to work toward these goals each day on her own, while I help her to manage her progress with a weekly questionnaire.
