2009-2010 Season

Our new season has lots of excitement from great music to great guest soloists—and several new works. Join us to hear these new pieces and meet the composers!

Thirteenth Annual High School Orchestra Invitational, Saturday October 17, Noon-7 pm, Lagerquist Hall

High school orchestras from throughout the region will perform on the Largerquist stage and receive comments from guest clinician, Huw Edwards.  The PLU Symphony Orchestra will also play a special 3 pm performance.  This event is free and open to the public. No Tickets Needed.

Orchestra Series I: Tuesday October 13, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

This concert features violinist, Svend Rønning and Swedish composer, Karin Rehnqvist, in a special residency at PLU. Works include Rehnqvist's Arktis Arktis!, Sibelius's Violin Concerto, and Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite No. 2. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

Orchestra Series II: Tuesday November 10, 8 pm Lagerquist Hall

This concert features piccolo soloist, Jennifer Rhyne and guest composer, James Romig. The orchestra will perform the world premiere of Romig's Glaciers. Rhyne will play the Hovland Piccolo Concerto with the USO. The concert will conclude with Dvorak's Symphony No. 7, Op. 70. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

This annual favorite features the Choir of the West, the University Chorale and members of the University Symphony Orchestra. Get your tickets early!

Tour Homecoming Concert: Friday February 12, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

Members of the USO or it's chamber orchestra, Kammermusik, will perform repertoire from their January 2010 northern tour. Included will be a new transcription for orchestra (done especially for our orchestra by the composer) of Tango, originally a chamber work by Dell Wade. Also featured will be PLU's Piano Chair, Regina Yeh, in a performance of Beethoven's "Emporer" Concerto.

Orchestra Series III: Student Soloists, Tuesday March 23, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

Three PLU student musicians will be chosen by a panel of three guest judges in November.  Their prize will be an opportunity to perform with the University Symphony in Lagerquist Hall. Winners and selections may be seen on the Student Soloists page of this site as they become available. Winners from 2008 are listed currently.

Orchestra Series IV: Tuesday May 4, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

Our final concert will feature violinist Marcia Ott in a performance of the beautifully lyrical Concerto for Violin by the late Keith Gates. The orchestra will also perform Schubert's monumental "Great" C Major Symphony. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.
