2011-2012 Season

Our new season has lots of excitement from great music to great guest soloists—and some new works. Join us to hear these new pieces and meet the composers!

Fifteenth Annual High School Orchestra Invitational, Saturday October 15, Noon-7 pm, Lagerquist Hall

High school orchestras from throughout the region will perform on the Largerquist stage and receive comments from Tacoma Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Harvey Felder. The PLU Symphony Orchestra will also play a special 3 pm performance. Special guests this year will be the Regency String Quartet. This event is free and open to the public. No Tickets Needed.

Orchestra Series I: Tuesday October 11, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

This concert features two works, Kevin Walczyk's rhythmic and colorful concerto for trumpet, Concerto Gaucho, and Camille Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3 ("Organ"). Featuring Zachary Lyman, Trumpet and Paul Tegels, organ. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

Orchestra Series II: Tuesday November 15, 8 pm Lagerquist Hall

Music of two different eras in orchestra literature: W. A. Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G Minor and Claude Debussy's Nocturnes. Featuring the University Singers, Brian Galante, director. Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

PLU's popular Christmas Concert, Performances begin November 30 in Portland, continue on December 3 and 4 at PLU, December 5 in Seattle, and  December 9 back at PLU. Contact the Music Department for more info.

This annual favorite features the Choir of the West, the University Chorale and members of the University Symphony Orchestra. Get your tickets early!

Orchestra Series III: Student Soloists,Tuesday March 20, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

Three PLU student musicians will be chosen by a panel of three guest judges in November.  Their prize will be an opportunity to perform with the University Symphony or other PLU ensembles in Lagerquist Hall. Winners and selections may be seen on the Student Soloists page of this site as they become available. Winners from last season are listed currently. In addition, a new student composition for orchestra will be premiered. Also featuring Beethoven's stirring Overture to Egmont.  Jeffrey Bell-Hanson, conductor.

Orchestra Series IV: KammerMusikere & Early and Baroque Music Ensemble, Friday April 13, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

KammerMusikere, the chamber orchestra of the PLUSO, will present jointly with PLU's Early and Baroque Music Ensemble "Music of the Commedia dell'Arte, featuring works inspired by this venerable theatrical tradition. Music includes Stravinsky's Pulcinella Suite, Mozart's Concerto for Horn No. 3, and arias from Pergolesi's intermezzo, La serva padrona. Featuring Gina Gille, horn and Barry Johnson, baritone.

Orchestra Series V: Tuesday May 15, 8 pm, Lagerquist Hall

Our final USO concert will feature both old and new. Beethoven's majestic "Emporer" Concerto will open the program. We continue with the premiere of an oratorio by Gregory Youtz, Drum Taps. Featuring new PLU Piano Chair Oksana Ejokina.
