PLU Symphony Orchestra

Student Soloists

The USO's concerto competition for PLU students.

Each year the University Symphony Orchestra sponsors a concerto competition for musicians at PLU called the Student Soloists Competition. Students may participate with the agreement of their studio teachers and the conductor of the USO.

Congratulations to the 2009-2010 winners, and to all who auditioned. The judges have selected, an alphabetical order:

Ryan Foster, trumpet       Arutunian:  Trumpet Concerto
Spencer Lang, tenor   Vaughan Williams:  On Wenlock Edge
Graham Logen, bassoon          Mozart:  Concerto for Bassoon in B-flat

These young artists performed with the USO on Tuesday 23 March, 2010.

2010 Auditions will be held on Tuesday 2 November, in Lagerquist Concert Hall. Prospective candidates must see Mrs. Muir in the Music Office to check eligibility and to sign up for auditions, consult with their studio teachers, and seek repertoire approval from Dr. Bell-Hanson. If your selection would require an ensemble other than the USO or KammerMusikk for accompaniment, like the Wind Ensemble, you will need to seek approval of the conductor/director of that ensemble as well.

Judges for the 2009-10 auditions were:

Dawn Padula, Chair of Vocal Studies at the University of Puget Sound

Ramona Allen, Pianist and Piano Teacher in the South Sound area

Jeremy Briggs-Roberts, Conductor of the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony Orchestra

Complete sets of rules and application forms are available at the PLU Music Department Office, MBR 206, or call 253-535-7602.

For more information you may e-mail the USO.
