The request is for donations of old, used cell phones and empty ink jet cartridges which are recyclable and will help to raise funds for the necessary medical treatments for A. Sharon Mills. Back to top Teen Feed AdvocateNo specific dateUniversity Street Ministry operates Teen Feed, a dinner program for homeless and street-involved youth. They serve dinner Sunday through Thursday. The heart of their program is having Advocates available to interact with the youth. This person commits to a minimum of six months to show up once a week to Teen Feed and sit and talk to the guests. The goal is to get to know them, create a safe and welcoming presence, and be available to help the young people know about services. Teen Feed interviews each potential Advocate after they have visited Teen Feed once. They seek those over 21, who show themselves comfortable interacting with youth who don’t typically trust adults. Puyallup Fair BuildSeptember 2008This September, Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity will be building a house at the Puyallup Fair! In two and half weeks the house will be framed, roofed, drywalled, sided, painted, and have the cabinets and doors installed. For this involved building event, Habitat needs to schedule groups right now to ensure that they have sufficient volunteers to complete the house in the short amount of time. Also, your group will receive free admission to the fair on the day that you build so you will be able to enjoy the fair after you build. In addition, Habitat for Humanity will have an information booth to let people know where Habitat is working in Tacoma and Pierce County. Habitat has openings on the following days: Build Days:

On Saturday, June 14th Habitat for Humanity is inviting father-son groups to build on the worksite for a Father's Day build. Back to top Habitat for Humanity - ReStoreMay 16-18, 2008The Habitat ReStore relies on its volunteers to run the store. Without enough volunteers, it cannot even open its doors for business. Unfortunately, the store has lost some key volunteers and staff in the past couple of weeks. At the same time, the ReStore is preparing for its One Year Anniversary Sale from May 16th through May 18th. Whether or not you have helped out at the ReStore before, Habitat for Humanity would love to have your help in a few different areas.

Do you want to have the most amazing experience? Do you want to make a difference in someone's life, including your own? If so, then MDA has an opportunity of a lifetime! They are looking for dedicated responsible and compassionate volunteers to be a counselor to a child with muscular dystrophy. MDA-sponsored summer camps offer a wide range of programs for young people ages 6 to 21 who are affected by neuromuscular disease. Campers attend weeklong sessions organized by MDA volunteers and staff. Camp activities are geared to the abilities of campers and may include fishing, swimming, horseback riding, boating, field hockey and baseball. Less physically demanding activities include arts and crafts, nature study, talent shows, cookouts and entertainment. Volunteer counselors (who must be at least 16 years old) receive an orientation and training that includes wheelchair techniques, lifting and transfers, personal hygiene, and emergency procedures. The primary responsibility of each counselor is to provide both physical and psychological support to their camper, thereby helping them to enjoy camp. Medical staff is available throughout the week to meet any healthcare needs that may arise. Team Tacoma is presently being established as an event planning team for this spring's Amazing Tacoma. Members of Team Tacoma will work to put this fundraising event together for the Toy Rescue Mission, a Tacoma organization that works to restore toys for children.
Amazing Tacoma will challenge participating teams to explore our City of Destiny in a way this city has never been seen before! From the Dome to the Museum District, from Opera Alley to Court C, racers will match wits, speed, humor, creativity and stamina as they dash from one destination to the next while successfully tackling fun and challenging tasks. Team Tacoma members will meet twice this fall and more often in the beginning of spring to put together this new event!
