International Media: Australian Perspectives


Course Description:

How do Australian media compare to U.S. media?

During this urban J-Term course, students will learn from Australian media professionals how their film, television, radio, and Internet differ from the same products in the United States . On-site visits are planned to The Age ( Melbourne 's newspaper), Channel 9 ( Australia 's largest television station), Triple J ( Australia 's alternative public radio station), the Australian Communications and Media Authority, the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, and the Australian Children's Television Foundation. The trip will begin in Melbourne, then we'll take the train to Sydney and then on to Brisbane. Students will have the opportunity to observe Australian media and their connection to the Australian culture and to be in Brisbane for Australia Day.

COMA 393: Communication Abroad (4 credits)


Prerequisites:

COMA 120: Media in the World (or professor approval)


Post Course Requirement:

Class presentations will be held during School of the Arts and Communication and Theater Week in spring 2009.


Program Fee:

$5,125. Includes airfare, lodging, program-related transportation and entrance fees. Meals are not included.


Application Deadline:

October 10, 2008. A non-refundable deposit of $50 is required with the application. A $250.00 non-refundable program payment to confirm participation in the course is due within 10 days of notification of acceptance. Maximum 20 students.
