Be a Nurse

Definition of Nursing

In the future as nurses we will come together to understand that the definition of being a nurse will be carried with us forever. Nursing is allowing our clients to be autonomous and provide care that incorporates nursing in a holistic approach. Nursing encompasses art, science and personal knowledge that are brought together by all health care providers and family members to provide the highest standard of care possible.

Philosophy of Nursing

Assumptions about nursing: The core of nursing is to advocate for the patient while exuding respect, compassion and empathy. The focus of nursing is being able to be creative and flexible to develop and adapt care for each patient as an individual. While considering their physical, emotional and spiritual needs to promote good health and healing.

Beliefs about health, environment and person:  Health represents an individual's overall wellbeing or condition at anytime, which can all be influenced by environment, lifestyle and utilization of the health care system.  Environment symbolizes the physical and social atmosphere we are living in. Vectors, climate, pollution and the quality of food and water have direct impact on individual’s lives. Social environments greatly influence individual’s culture, ethics, values, beliefs and health.   Person includes the individual, family and community which the person lives. Level of comprehension and awareness of health and environment directly effect person as well as the requirements of safety, security health and love.

Outcomes of Nursing: I believe the result of nursing is the improvement of an individual/community’s status of health.

How will I live out my philosophy of nursing?   I will follow my philosophy by being a role model and caring for myself in the way I want my patients to care for themselves. To be a role model I must practice the acts that I teach my patients including proper diet, exercise, practicing primary care as well as stress management.

Coat of Arms

One Year Goal: By May 2010, I anticipate to have accomplished much as a professional nurse. I plan on entering the professional nursing world sometime the end of the summer of 2009 after passing the NCLEX. I hope to be offered a job in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Labor and Delivery after I graduate. My goal is to find a position as an RN that I feel apart of the team. I hope by May 2010 my comprehension and skills will have increased tremendously to where I feel less of a novice and more competent in my abilities and knowledge.

Five Year Goal: By May 2014 I hope to further my education while continuing to practice in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or Labor and Delivery.  My true ambition is to receive my Masters in Women's Health with a post graduate certificate in Nurse Midwifery.
I have a passion for women's health and the magical experience of pregnancy.  I hope to be able to open my own Birth Center one day and have a team to share in my same love for women and pregnancy. Also, by 2014 I hope to have begun a family of my own. Family is very important to me and I would love to be able to relate to many of my future expectant mothers.
