For Flute, Bassoon, Reader and Optional Dancer
Duration: 12 minutes
NOTES Blackbirds is a duet for flute and bassoon that provides musical responses to each of the 13 very short poems that make up "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird" by American poet Wallace Stevens. As the poems provide many ways of looking at a blackbird, so do the short musical pieces provide multiple ways of thinking about the combination of flute and bassoon sonorities. Each poem is read (by one of the players or a separate speaker) before each piece is played. The piece is intended for choreography for a solo dancer, though a group of dancers, or no dancers at all is also possible.
