An overture for orchestra and recorded construction sounds
Written in 1995 for Jerry Kracht and the Pacific Lutheran University Symphony Orchestra
Duration: 4.5min.
NOTES The Construction of the House was composed in 1995 in celebration
of the first season of the new Lagerquist Concert Hall at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma,
Washington. A short, frothy overture for orchestra, it intermingles the recorded sounds of
building construction- engines, saws, hammers, brooms, voices and a popped acoustical-test
balloon - with orchestral gestures derived from those sounds. In the manner of a concerto,
the tape and the orchestra dialogue with each other until the final, good-natured and noisy ending.
