Nursing Definition

PLU logo Nursing is a science and an art. Nursing is applied to individuals, families, and communities used to asses and promote health and wellness of the mind, body and soul. Nursing encompasses self, interpersonal relationships, collaboration, critical thinking, responsibility and  accountability to reach the maximum outcome for all involved.

Program Outcomes

  • Provide evidence-based clinically competent care.
  • Enact role of service as a professionally educated member of society.
  • Apply the nursing process in the provision of direct and indirect care of individuals, families, and communities in a variety of settings and across diverse populations.
  • Collaborate in the design, management, and coordination of care.
  • Assume responsibility and accountability for professional practice.
  • Participate in processes that influence the health care delivery system.

Professional Statement

Professional nurses understand their own personal health beliefs and respectfully demonstrate cultural competence of others. Professional nurses use knowledge, theory, and evidence-based research to provide the best quality care possible. The nursing role requires compassion, autonomy, critical thinking, responsibility, and accountability.

1 Year Goal: Over the next year I plan to soak up as much knowledge and experience I can from my nursing professors and clinical mentors. By the end of next year I should have improved qualities such as: critical thinking, responsibility, accountability, and clinical competence.

5 Year Goal: At the end of five years I plan to graduate from PLU's Nursing Program with all program outcomes met. I plan to work in the nursing field but have not yet decided which area that will be. I hope to be in the Advanced Beginner stage of Benner's Stages of Nursing Proficiency.
