What is Supplemental Instruction (SI)?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized and highly successful learning assistance program that identifies and supports traditionally challenging courses. Students who attend peer-led SI sessions earn higher grades and have significantly higher rates of successful completion of the course than those who do not.

SI leaders (students who have already taken the course successfully and who complete 10 hours of SI Leader training) facilitate 3 weekly sessions that focus on both what to learn and how to learn it. It is highly collaborative; students engage with each other to process material and gain confidence in their learning.

How often are SI sessions held?

There are usually 3 sessions per week, each covering different material and topics

Who is the SI Leader and what is their role?

The SI Leader is a student who completed the course successfully in a previous semester and has been thoroughly trained to provide interactive, collaborative sessions that help all participants learn content AND develop learning and study strategies. The SI leader attends class every day and meets weekly with the professor to ensure solid understanding of the material and to discuss strategies for engaging students in the session.
