Tips for Using Your Holidays Wisely

We hope you are able to make the most of your holidays by preparing the materials for your application to the graduate program which you are pursuing. We have prepared some tips to help you make graduate school a reality.

  1. Your first stop: Review the steps on the How To Apply page to learn about the application requirements and process.
  2. Start an application. Our application process is through BusinessCAS, an online Centralized Application Service.
  3. Develop your personal statement. Identify and discuss your educational and professional goals in 300-400 words.
  4. Decide your recommenders.  Each application requires two letters of recommendation. References can be academic or professional.
  5. Prepare your resume.  Includes employment history; significant academic, professional, and community achievements; honors and awards. Check out the Resources for Preparing Resumes.
  6. Arrange official transcripts to be sent directly to BusinessCAS. Transcripts must be sent by the registrar’s office of the colleges and universities you attended. Do not send transcripts to PLU.
  7. Schedule to take the GRE or GMAT.  Arrange for GRE or GMAT results to be sent to PLU (the PLU code is 4597).
  8. If applicable, request that ETS or IELTS send your English language exam scores to PLU (Institution code is 4597).
  9. Explore financial aid opportunities. PLU offers a variety of financial aid and scholarship opportunities. See Details.

  4. Develop your personal statement. Describe your background in writing, and your goals and reasons for wanting to enroll in the program in two pages. Both pages should be double-spaced, using 10 or 12 point font, with the pages numbered, and your name at the top right.
  5. Develop a creative writing sample. Showcase your best work, 15 pages of poetry or 30-40 pages of prose, or a genre mix not to exceed 40 pages.
  6. Develop 500-word literary critique. In two pages create a critical response to a literary work you have recently read, which illustrates your writerly intelligence and critical abilities.
  7. Upload all your materials to your GradCAS application portal.

    • What significant cultural experiences have most influenced your present development and your desire to be a couple and family therapist?
    • What are your professional career goals after completing your degree?
    • What are your strengths that will help you achieve your professional goals?
    • What do you consider to be areas for personal growth that may need the most attention during your training as a therapist at PLU?

Have you had any experience with the role and what aspects of the role appeal to you professionally? Limit response to 2500 characters.
