The 2022-23 ASPLU Executive Election is Approaching!

While our executive candidates are running uncontested, your vote still matters! These might be your next student body representatives. Check out their campaign plans to get to know them.

Candidates

Pronouns: He/Him

Year in School: Senior

Major(s) & Minor(s): International Affairs

Qualifications:

  • Director of Social Justice: 2021
  • University Diversity Committee – Student representative 
  • Campus safety review committee: Student representative for the student body for the community engaged safety conversation 
  • Earth and diversity planning committee: collaborative with ASPLU and the d center and RHA
  • ASPLU senator class representative of 2022 (2020-2021)
  • Community and youth advocate (2014 – 2018)

Policy Proposals:

Our policy proposal includes both broad culture-changing goals as well as specific policy proposals.

Intersectional Justice

  • Uplift the existing efforts towards improving PLU’s environmental impact and legacy.
      1. Reinstate efforts increase our waste diversion rate.
      2. Increase education and training around the origins and responses to the environmental crisis.
      3. Lift the charge for water in the commons.
  • Uplifting the existing anti-racist and social justice efforts that student affinity groups, staff, and faculty are currently undertaking.
      1. Instating mandatory and intentional Land Acknowledgements campus-wide.
      2. Support affinity clubs with celebrating heritage months.
      3. Expanding access to gender neutral bathrooms.
      4. Expand on efforts to make campus more accessible and ADA compliant.
  • Masking and COVID regulation consistency and justice
    1. Eliminate graded attendance to in-person classes.
  • Carry on the current Senate’s Mental health support efforts 
    1. Continuing the My Academics Deserve Care campaign.
    2. Collaboration with RHA to affirm the work of RAs to not include professional mental health specialist responsibilities.

 

Intentional Community Building

  • Carry on the current administration’s efforts to support and connect First Year and Incoming Students.
  • PLU and Parkland-wide Block Parties in collaboration with RHA and the Community Engagement Center.
      • Club and affinity group fundraisers
      • Feature students artists
      • All with the intention of breaking down the negative connotations associated with our Parkland neighbors.
  • Continue the institution of annual Homecoming/ Prom in collaboration with RHA.
  • Faculty Support
      • Carry on the current administration’s efforts to build a culture and messaging around supporting our hardworking staff and faculty. 
      • Potential fundraising to support Wang Center programming. 
  • Culture change towards advocacy
    • Work with the civic engagement director to continue building towards a campus culture of proactivity via campus and community engagement.

 

Goals for ASPLU:

  • Training
    • Offer comprehensive training on legislation understanding and construction to empower senators to create policy to execute their personal campaign goals.
    • Collaborate with DJS director/ leadership and Center for Diversity, Justice, and Sustainability staff to hold Anti-racist training/ race caucuses/ power walks/ individual reflection.
    • Collaborate with DJS directors/ leadership and environmentally-aligned staff to hold environmental crisis training, response, and resources on campus.
  • Structure
    • Renew our collaborator positions to expand participation and leadership opportunities.
    • Amend our assignment of paid hours to be equal at least amongst the environmental justice and social justice directors.
    • Invite all directors to the Board of Regents meetings.
  • Cross-Collaboration and Support 
    • Continue and expand upon the tradition of senate retreats.
    • Instate the 1:1 check ins between each member of the senate and executive team.
    • Increase cross-campus communication and collaboration by connecting with RHA leadership.

Information regarding the ASPLU organization, Executive position descriptions, campaigning, and election rules will be given at this meeting. 

Candidates MUST attend one interest meeting to register for the Executive Elections. Attendance is only needed for one of the interest meetings, as the content will be the same for each.

  • March 14th: 3-3:30pm in AUC 134
  • March 16th: 9:30-10am in AUC 134
  • March 22nd: 2-2:30pm in AUC 172

Candidates MUST have attended an Interest Meeting or met with the ASPLU president before registering.

After doing so, candidates MUST register and specify which Executive position they are running for on the registration sheet located in the front of the ASPLU Office, AUC 172.

  • DEADLINE: Registration closes at 5:00pm on March 24th.

To officially participate in the ASPLU Executive Elections and begin campaigning, candidates MUST turn in their election materials which include:

1) Petition with 30 signatures from current PLU students. Petition sheets can be found in the ASPLU Office (AUC 172) or on page 9 of this packet. PLU students may sign more than one petition sheet. 

2) Headshot for Executive Election purposes. This includes features on our social media pages, website, and ballot during the elections. 

3) Policy Statement for Executive Election purposes. This includes features on our social media pages, website, and ballot during the elections. Specific guidelines follow:

    • No longer than one page.
    • Should specifically discuss a candidate’s goals for the next year and their qualifications. A copy of a Policy Statement is attached to this packet on page 10. 

4) Campaign Plan to prevent violations and promote transparency. 

    • Provides an overview of a candidate’s campaigning strategies and needs. 
    • Will not be shared with other candidates, nor on ASPLU’s social media pages, website, and ballot.
    • An example of a Campaign Plan is attached to this packet on page 11. A clean copy is on page 12.

DEADLINE: All the election materials above MUST be emailed to President Chan at asplupres@plu.edu by 5:00pm on March 24th.  

Failure to submit your election materials by 5:00pm will result in disqualification.

Campaigning starts the Monday (4/4) we return from Spring Break.

President Chan should have reviewed your election materials and confirmed your official participation before the campaigning session began. If not, email asplupres@plu.edu as soon as possible.

Absolutely no further campaigning is allowed after April 13th at 11:59pm

This will be an opportunity to share policy statements and qualifications, respond to student questions, and gain publicity.

The rules and structure of the debate will be determined by the ASPLU Election Council and will be made available to all candidates one day before the event.

Candidates must keep track of ALL their campaign spending, including reimbursed printing and distribution costs by ASPLU.

Elections begin at 8am on Thursday 4/14 and end at 5pm on Friday 4/15.
