Inclement weather campus hours | Feb. 8-11

Alert Type: Snow

Start Time: Feb 8, 2019 @ 9:41am

End Time: Feb 8, 2019 @ 1:25pm

Many of you likely are following the news about a significant winter storm that is predicted to affect the South Sound as early as tomorrow afternoon and expected to last through the weekend. The university is anticipating that the predicted snow, ice, and wind has the potential to impact safe movement and travel both on and off campus. In light of these expected challenges, the university will proactively close at 3 p.m. on Friday, February 8, and remain closed through Sunday, February 10. Minimal university services will be available during this period of time.

Residence halls will remain open and functioning; however, campus services, including path clearing, will be limited. Those residents who can leave campus for a local residence before the snowy weather arrives this weekend are encouraged to do so. For those Lutes who remain on campus, operating hours for campus dining during this period of time are as follows:

Sunday | 8:00 a.m. – Midnight

In addition, the Mortvedt Library will be open for student use by card swipe from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and the Names Fitness Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The Anderson University Center will be open for regular hours through the weekend.

During this severe weather, please exercise caution while walking from parking lots, transit locations and on pathways to and around campus. We recommend wearing non-slip, rubber-sole footwear and an insulated coat until you arrive at your destination. If you must walk outside, you might consider walking on grassy areas instead of sidewalks or roadways if they are icy. Facilities Management will concentrate clearing efforts on interior pathways. Parking lots may not be cleared. Snow accumulation may continue throughout the weekend covering up previously cleared areas. Please be very careful and, when possible, limit travel outdoors.

Commuter students or employees needing temporary housing during hazardous weather may contact Campus Safety at 253-535-7441. Students and employees will be offered a temporary stay in an empty residence hall room or lounge. You will need to supply your own bedding.

A determination will be made by 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, regarding the status of Monday morning and afternoon classes or activities, and by 1 p.m. on Monday, February 11 for evening classes and activities. The PLU homepage will be updated with closure information (www.plu.edu) or you can call the campus closure hotline at 877-322-0872 for information regarding the status of PLU’s hours of operation.

Students, staff and faculty are urged to use discretion in deciding whether to travel to campus and should use extreme caution while on the road.
