In 2001 Choral Union was selected by audition to travel to San Antonio, Texas to perform at the American Choral Directors Association’s national conference. The trip was a tremendous success, and instilled in the members of the choir a desire to “take our show on the road” on a regular basis. The choir began a three-year rotation of travel in 2002, with a journey to Austria, Switzerland and Italy and a performance at the World Harp Congress, held in Geneva.
In 2005 Choral Union was selected to sing at the prestigious Cambridge (England) Summer Music Festival, which led to a tour of England and France. In addition to singing in Cambridge, highlights of the tour included a performance at Chartres Cathedral and singing for Sunday mass at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. In the summer of 2008 the choir traveled to the Czech Republic, Germany, Slovenia and Croatia, including a performance at Festival Bled.
In the summer of 2011 Choral Union visited Scandinavia, with concerts in Reykjavik, Iceland; Stockholm, Sweden; Hamar and Bergen, Norway; and mass at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim as part of the annual St. Olav Festival. In 2014, the choir traveled to Italy where we gave concerts in Bologna, Levanto, and Montepulciano.
The choir sang at mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, and won the Mixed Choir and Sacred Music categories at the Florence International Choir Festival. Mezzo-soprano Heather Weirich was named outstanding female soloist at the festival, and Richard Nance won the outstanding conductor award.
These tours provide wonderful opportunities for members of Choral Union to see the world and experience other cultures. Equally important is the opportunity to bring musical excellence from our country to others, with performances in some of the world’s most beautiful and historic venues.
