HM King Harald V of Norway Visits Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday, May 23

Community members are invited to welcome HM King Harald V of Norway as he arrives on the PLU campus on May 23. Join us for flag waving and celebration at the only public viewing opportunity during His Majesty’s visit to the Pacific Northwest. Please plan to arrive in Centennial Plaza, in the center of campus, before 10:45 a.m.

The public also is welcome at PLU’s Commencement ceremony at the Tacoma Dome, where the King will receive an honorary degree and deliver the Commencement address, beginning at 2:30 p.m. on May 23.

The schedule has been finalized for His Majesty King Harald V of Norway’s May 23 visit to Pacific Lutheran University in honor of its 125th anniversary.

All members of the press must receive official credentials through the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. The closing date for accreditation is Monday, May 4, 2015; requests must be submitted via email to and and copied to Press availability at some events is limited, however, so earlier is better; please indicate which event(s) you are interested in covering.

Here is the general chronological schedule of events on May 23:

At PLU, from 11:15 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., HM King Harald V will:

  • tour campus in a public appearance;
  • attend a private reception with students;
  • attend a private luncheon; and
  • conduct a brief press meeting—his only open press availability during his visit to Washington.

Afterward, he will travel to the Tacoma Dome, where he will receive an honorary degree and deliver the PLU Commencement address beginning at 2:30 p.m.

All events are open to media coverage, though availability is limited at the reception and luncheon.

PLU will provide a media room (and lunch) on campus, and members of the media will be shuttled from PLU to the Tacoma Dome and back again; access to the Tacoma Dome press area is by shuttle only.

A detailed press program will be prepared and disseminated to accredited press closer to May 23; the program also will be published on the website of the Norwegian Royal Palace.
