Participants develop an appreciation of their role in becoming culturally competent by providing a framework on how to address issues of equity and race/ethnicity; creating common language for entering into discourse and norms for engaging in courageous conversations.

10:45 – 12:00pm Understanding Racial Stereotypes
Through video, interactive exercises and storytelling, participants are challenged to examine the impact of racial stereotypes and how these unspoken, often unconscious stereotypes create barriers to genuine relationships and influence our attitudes, behaviors and beliefs about one another.

1:00 – 3:00pm Mitigating the Impact of Stereotype Threat
Video, lecture, and group discussion are used to help participants develop new understanding and skills to address the impact of stereotypes on college community. Research based on Claude Steele’s work is highlighted using video, lecture and group discussion as a way to assist participants learning four effective strategies to counter the impact of stereotype threat on learning.
