Mapping Monuments: Guatemala's 20th Century Civil War Monuments

Born out of a project from Dr. Emily Davidson’s (Hispanic Studies) “Hispanic Voices for Social Change” class, Riley Dolan (PLU ’19) identified a lack of visual and written information about monuments erected to memorialize victims of the 20th Century Civil War in Guatemala. After researching and documenting memorials in Guatemala, having identified over 45 items , and with the support of the Digital Humanities Lab at PLU, Riley and Josh Smith (PLU I&TS) have worked on creating this free and public collection of material. Together they have uploaded these photos, written descriptions, and identified GPS locations of the monuments.

Restoring the Flow: The Deschutes Estuary and Environmental Ethics

In the fall of 2018, Dr. Jenny James’ first-year writing seminar titled “Water, Politics, Place” took part in a community engagement partnership with the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team (DERT), located in Olympia, WA. Students created a web-based class project that supports DERT’s efforts to restore the Deschutes estuary, which includes video interviews of local community advocates for estuary restoration as well as read essays authored by PLU students which make a case for the removal of Olympia’s 5th Avenue Dam to promote the ecological renewal of the Deschutes watershed.
