Listed below you will find all of the positions that are available for student workers with Dining & Culinary Services. Students work in The Commons, Hauge Espresso Cart, Kelley Café, Tahoma Bakery & Café and Catering.

All positions are hired through the Student Employment website, you will need to apply there. You need to be 18 or older to work for Dining & Culinary Services. Not all positions are listed at all times—there are certain times of the year when we are not hiring. If you don't see something there to apply for, please contact our main office at 253-535-7472.

Food Worker Card Required

Before you may begin working, you'll need to obtain a Food Worker Card—you will not be allowed to work until you turn in your card. Take the test online at the Pierce County Health Department website — have a credit card ready to pay your $10. If you want to attend a class in person, the information is also available on the Pierce County Health Department website.

International Students


BEFORE you work for us, you need to have an authorization letter to apply for a Social Security number from International Student Services.

To do that, you need to

  1. Apply for a Dining & Culinary Services job through the Student Employment website.
  2. Download the Social Security Number Request Letter, you fill out the left side.
  3. Bring the letter to the Dining & Culinary Services office to have Wendy Robins sign it.
  4. Follow the Steps 2-4 on page 2 of the Social Security Number Request Letter.

Host

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

Are you passionate about giving great customer service? This is the position for you, because the Host helps to maintain a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service. Your responsibilities will include preparing and maintaining the service area, prepping food items for use in the student self-serve area, serving food, restocking station supplies, and cleaning the seating area. As a Host, you are providing guests with the most important impression of Dining & Culinary Services by keeping the service are sparkling clean and stocked. We want your smiling face and your organizational skills to represent Dining & Culinary Services to the PLU community.


Deli Prep

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

Do you want to get hands-on with the food? This is the place because as Deli Prep, you are integral to the successful operation of the Dining Hall. You will be working with members of the kitchen staff to make sandwiches, prep food for the salad bar and set up/stock the salad bar. Some of your responsibilities will include preparing the salad bar in accordance with recipes and your station line cook’s guidance, prepping food items for use in the student self-serve area, serving food, restocking station supplies, and other tasks as assigned. If you like to be in the kitchen and have a passion for hands-on food work, we'd love to have you has part of the team.


Server

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

Do you love to interact with people? If so, come and join our team as a Server where you have the chance to maintain a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly and efficient customer service. Servers will work at Crave—the grill station, Aglio—the pizza & pasta station, and at Cross Cultures—our ethnic food station, you will sign up for a primary schedule and will be trained to work at all stations. Some of your responsibilities will include assisting the line cook with food service, restocking station supplies and other tasks as assigned. A server is also a key player in the sustainability mission for Dining & Culinary Services as you will support recycling, composting, garbage disposal and keeping your assigned line station clean and sanitary. Come join us as a part of the team in The Commons and explore how the stations work from the inside out.


Prep Cook

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

Do you want to get hands-on with the food? This is the place because as a student Prep Cook, you are integral to the successful operation of each of the stations in the Dining Hall: Crave (the grill station), Aglio (the pizza & pasta station), Cross Cultures (ethnic food station) and the Deli. Some of your responsibilities will include prepping food for service on your assigned line station under the guidance of your station line cook, serving food, restocking station supplies and other duties as needed. You will learn from your student manager, line cook, & Sous Chef about consistent recipe adherence, proper prep methods, service ware, ingredients and portion size. You’ll sign up for a primary schedule and will be trained to work at all stations. Get in first to get your choice of which station you prefer.


Cashier/Barista

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

If you love people & coffee, this is the place for you. As a Barista/Cashier, you’ll get the chance to create a varied mix of coffee and non-coffee drinks and to put on display your courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service skills. You will have a ton of charisma that will shine out from behind the counter as you engage customers and encourage them to have coffee and a snack. Some of your responsibilities will include ringing up guest meals, restocking station supplies and setting the register as well as adhering to the Pierce County Health Department rules & regulations. The Barista/Cashier position will work at Old Main Market, Hauge espresso cart, Kelley Café at Morken and Tahoma Bakery & Café. Some of the skills you will learn are cash register operation, espresso techniques, register accountability, service wear and portion size.


Cashier

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

Are you an efficient worker and a people person? The Cashier is the face of Dining & Culinary Services who engages every person that passes through the service lines and maintains a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service. You will be working in the The Commons during breakfast and lunch periods where food will be purchased on an a la carte, item by item, basis and during dinners where students purchase their all-you-care-to-eat meals. You will learn from your student manager, cook staff and management staff about cash register operation, register accountability, service wear, and portion size. If you love a fast-paced environment where you get to interact with a lot of people, we'd love to have you as a cashier!


Dish—Pots & Pans

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week 6am-8:30pm

Are you a team player who thinks you would enjoy the back of the house work? This position is perfect for you! You will help to maintain a positive company image by supporting the cooks, chefs, and other team members with courteous, friendly, and efficient service. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, collecting, washing, and returning dishes used by guests, catering department, and kitchen/servery team throughout the day. This position also supports the kitchen staff with garbage and recycling disposal and cleaning duties as required. You will be exposed to hot, dry, cold, wet and/or humid conditions and will often work with and around machinery that requires personal protective equipment.


Catering Server

Starting wage is $9.19 per hour with a maximum time commitment of 20 hours per week while enrolled in classes. Shifts available 7 days a week varying hours.

Do you have a passion for making people happy? You just might be the next best Catering Server to work in Dining & Culinary Services. Catering Servers are hard-working individuals who love to interact with their team and their guests. You will find yourself making and displaying a coffee service for 10 one day and serving at an event for 300 the next. Some of your responsibilities will include serving food, prepping food products, delivering food and setting up events.
