Computer Science A

Course Description
This year’s AP Summer Institute will increase the participant’s knowledge of AP Computer Science A course content and will provide materials, resources, and strategies for use with students. A broad range of curriculum topics will be covered, including Object-Oriented Programming concepts, 1D and 2D arrays, Lists/ArrayLists, recursion, common algorithms, and the labs: Magpie, PictureLab, and Elevens. Participants will also work with AP CS Free Response Questions and receive the latest information from the 2017 Reading. A basic knowledge of the Java programming language is necessary in order to receive maximum benefit from this workshop.

Items participants should bring: Bring a laptop
Participants should bring a laptop with a copy of the Java Development Kit (JDK, not just the JRE) installed. If a textbook has been chosen, bring a copy of that as well.

Instructor Biography
Renee Ciezki is a computer science instructor and teacher-trainer. She taught Advanced Placement (AP) Computer Science for more than 20 years and currently teaches Computer Science and Computer Information Systems courses at Estrella Mountain Community College in Avondale, Arizona. Renee served as the College Board Advisor on the Development Committee for the AP Computer Science A exam from 2010-2014. As an endorsed College Board consultant, Renee conducts AP teacher workshops and has been an AP Reader/Question Leader since 2000. She also leads AP study sessions and other workshops for the National Math and Science Initiative, is a member of the CSTA Leadership Cohort, and serves as Secretary for the Arizona Chapter of CSTA.
