This four day session will enable a group of new and experienced AP Chemistry teachers to discuss unique feature of AP Chemistry, to review the content, and the depth of the content, expected of an AP Chemistry class, and to perform a subset of laboratories you might use in teaching AP Chemistry. In the course of the discussion, we will have numerous example of different successful ways to set up your course, utilizing multiple resources and activities. We will use different textual materials, web sites, and laboratories to see how they will interact with your course schedule and the exam dates in enhancing your ability to teach the course whether you are a new or an experienced AP Chemistry teacher.
Items Participants Should Bring:
Participants are asked to obtain a copy of and solve the Free Response Questions from the AP* Chemistry Exam. The Exam can be found at the AP Central website:http://apcentral.collegeboard.com a few days after the AP Chemistry Exam is given in early May. If you cannot obtain a copy or have difficulty solving the questions, this is no problem—come to the Institute and we will help you! Participants are also asked bring their own personal laptop computer, a protective lab coat, a calculator (with trigonometric functions), a new (empty) thumb drive for copying files, their own personal protective eyewear and lots of enthusiasm!
Richard Schwenz teaches general and physical chemistry classes in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado. He is also heavily involved in the preparation of future teachers, especially secondary science teachers, supervising student teachers, participating in the clinical preparation of pre-service teachers, and teaching in the science methods classes.
Richard has been an AP Chemistry reader since 1999, and a table leader since 2003. A College Board endorsed consultant in the western region, he has presented numerous workshops and institutes for AP Chemistry teachers throughout the west, and in the Atlanta area in conjunction with Steve Thompson. Most recently, he is one of the senior reviewers, and one of the original curriculum advisors for the AP course audit project, focusing on the chemistry review. He was just of the review teams for the revised course audit for chemistry, and for the AP Chemistry lab manual.
He is a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder and the Ohio State University, both in chemistry.
