The True Statesman
“Only the true statesman, the ‘good, wise and skillful guardian & protector’, who rules for the practical interests & self-respect of the citizens can truly be called the guide and pilot of a nation. Once the ruler ceases using persuasion and merely uses the threat of punishment, the government is no longer one fitting for rational human beings. This is not to say that a leader should never use coercion under compelling circumstances or when principles are at stake, but that in the ideal sense a leader would not have to do so. Once a leader uses coercion rather than persuasion, he or she is no longer, by definition, leading”.
~ Cicero, Roman Politician, Philosopher, “De Re Public”~
