This course focuses on the acquisition and application of maritime industry-specific knowledge with a managerial perspective. Participants will examine the strategic role of managers in maritime activity and business. Content includes shipping and transportation, law and regulation, and vessel and terminal operations, with a particular emphasis on the Northwest Seaport Alliance and other regional stakeholders.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the conclusion of the course.

This session introduces the contents of the syllabus and provides a historical geographical and economic context for the coming sessions.  After this session, students will be able to

  • Identify historical  trends and technological advancements that have culminated in the current global trading regime
  • Explain the impact of transportation and logistics on global and domestic economies
  • Identify current trade routes and patterns
  • Explain the five modes of transportation and the affinity of the commodities and products for each
  • Describe the economic challenges and opportunities of ship ownership and operation
  • List the agencies and entities that oversee and regulate international trade
  • Describe current trends in international maritime business and explain methodologies to keep abreast of its dynamic nature
  • Outline the impact of maritime business on local and regional economics

This session provides an introduction to management theories and practices, with an emphasis on developing specific skills for leading and managing in organizations. After this session, students will be able to

  • Understand leadership/management styles, including our own preferences and the needs of others
  • Explore the impact of emotions on productivity in the workplace and how to lead with emotional intelligence
  • Understand and apply motivation theories that influence individual and team motivation
  • Understand types of workplace conflict and how to apply effective conflict management skills
  • Learn and apply principles for leading change in organizations

This session provides an introduction to vessel, terminal, and port management and organization. After this session, students will be able to

  • Describe key elements, players, and concerns of vessel management and organization
  • Describe key elements, players, and concerns of terminal management and organization
  • Identify and describe the role of port authorities
  • Describe future trends in maritime management

This session provides a deeper look at the operations of ports and their related intermodal transit, labor, and infrastructure concerns. After this session, students will be able to

  • Explain the history and origins of labor unions in relation to goods movement
  • Identify the domains and jurisdictions of various labor unions
  • Describe the Puget Sound regional goods movement system with regards to ports and related infrastructure
  • Explain the significance of rail transport in respect to the movement of goods and identify various configurations of intermodal rail transfer
  • Identify and determine the appropriate trucking services for various goods

This session provides an overview of the regulatory and legal regimes affecting international maritime commerce, with a particular emphasis on environmental issues and regulations.

Students will spend the day behind-the-scenes at the Port of Tacoma to concretize topics presented in classroom sessions, meeting with leads of different functional areas, observing rail transfers firsthand, and touring warehousing facilities.  The day will end with an exploration of the future of vessel and terminal operations.

After this session, students will be able to

  • Define common vessel and terminal operations terms
  • Describe the operational requirements and servicing needs specific to vessel types
  • Identify different terminal types and describe the function and operational characteristics
  • Explain key emerging trends in vessel and terminal operations with regards to economies of scale and automation
