Morken Madness: March 9 - 13th

It’s almost time for the first ever Morken Madness! Join us the week of March 9 – 13th as the Mathematics and Computer Science departments host special events in celebration of their disciplines. In the lead-up to the week of Morken Madness, the Math and CompSci departments are sponsoring a few contests – winners will be announced on the final day of Morken Madness week (details below). All of the PLU community is invited to attend and participate!

  • Eat pie on Pi day! We’ll be serving up free slices (come early – the pie goes fast)
  • Faculty pie contest: Natural Science faculty members will bake their best pies and bring them in for the PLU community to judge. There’ll be first, second, and third place prizes for the winning faculty members.

WHAT IS POST-IT PANDEMONIUM?

Post-it Pandemonium is a Computer Science-sponsored project that uses post-it “pixels” arranged in a specific pattern to create a CS-themed wall mural. The image will cover the wall outside of Morken 203, and we’d love to have your help building it! We’ll have CS students and faculty on hand for chapel break times (MWF 10:30-11am) during Morken Madness week to provide instructions for anyone who’d like to participate. All members of the PLU community are welcome to drop by at any time and assemble a part of the image – instructions will be left outside Morken 203.

There will be lots of post-its to put up, so we need all hands on deck! Not only is this a great opportunity to learn how pixels are used in computer images, but it’s also a chance to be part of creating a public art project in Morken. See the final image on the last day of Morken Madness week: Friday, March 13th!

MORKEN MADNESS CONTESTS

Morken 233 Needs a New Name
Currently dubbed the “Pi Room,” Morken 233 needs a new name to go with upcoming changes to the space. All faculty, staff, students, and alums are welcome to submit names, and of course, math puns and clever turns of phrase are always welcome. The PLU community (students, faculty, staff, alums) will vote on the top three names and select a winner. The person who submitted the winning name will receive a $20 gift card to the Lute Locker and have bragging rights in perpetuity. 😉

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Logos
What image best represents math? What about computer science? We want to rep the Math and CompSci departments wherever we go, and we’d like your help designing logos to be printed on buttons! Designs can be digital or hand-drawn, but must fit inside a 2 inch diameter circle. Just like the renaming contest, all faculty, staff, students, and alums are welcome to submit designs. The PLU community will vote on the top logos and select first, second, and third place winners. The people who submitted the top three logos for each department will receive a gift card to the Lute Locker ($20 for first place, $10 for second place, $5 for third place).

Rules

  1. You don’t have to be a Natural Sciences major to enter, but you must be a PLU student, alum, staff, or faculty member.
  2. You may only enter each contest twice.
  3. Logo designs can be black and white or in color.

Timeline

  • Submissions are accepted February 24th – March 8th
