Morken Madness: March 8 - 12th

It’s almost time for the first ever Morken Madness! Join us the week of March 8 – 12th as the Mathematics and Computer Science departments host special events in celebration of their disciplines. In the lead-up to the week of Morken Madness, the Math and CompSci departments are sponsoring a contest – winners will be announced on the final day of Morken Madness week (details below). All of the PLU community is invited to attend and participate!

Monday, March 8th, 12-12:30pm

  • Virtual coffee/tea gathering to chat with other Natural Sciences students, faculty, and staff. Learn about faculty members’ educational and professional paths.
  • Voting begins on the Math and Computer Science logo design contest finalists. Click here to vote!
  • Participate in a virtual Enrieké Scavenger Hunt. Details will be released via email and social media.

Tuesday, March 9th, 9:30-10am

Wednesday, March 10th

  • 11:30am – 12pm Study Away STEM Information Session – learn about semester Gateway programs in Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago, Norway, and Oaxaca as well as the upcoming J-Term course in the Bahamas. Get details here.
  • 12-12:30pm Virtual Q&A session with Math and Computer Science majors to discuss their involvement in experiential learning – things like research, internships, Math/CS contest opportunities, and tutoring.

Thursday, March 11th

  • 11:30am – 12pm Study Away STEM Information Session – learn about semester Gateway programs in Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago, Norway, and Oaxaca as well as the upcoming J-Term course in the Bahamas. Get details here.
  • 1:30-2pm NatSci Stroll around lower campus with special guest Reverend Jen Rude talking about spiritual wellness.

Friday, March 12th, 12-12:30pm

  • Winners of Math & Computer Science logo design contests are announced in a virtual celebration. All winning logos will be featured on Natural Sciences websites and social media accounts. The Pi Room’s new name will be unveiled, and the results of the Enrieké Scavenger Hunt will be announced.

MORKEN MADNESS CONTEST

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Logos
What image best represents Math? What about Computer Science? We want to rep the Math and CompSci departments wherever we go, and we’d like your help designing logos to be printed on buttons! Designs can be digital or hand-drawn, but must fit inside a 2 inch diameter circle. All faculty, staff, students, and alums are welcome to submit designs. The PLU community will vote on the top logos and select first, second, and third place winners. The people who submitted the top three logos for each department will receive a gift card to the Lute Locker ($20 for first place, $10 for second place, $5 for third place).

Rules

  1. You don’t have to be a Natural Sciences major to enter, but you must be a PLU student, alum, staff, or faculty member.
  2. You may only enter each contest twice.
  3. Logo designs can be black and white or in color.
  4. If you submitted last year, your submission is still active. No need to resubmit.

Timeline

  • Submissions are accepted February 17th – March 7th
  • Voting runs March 8th – 11th
  • Winners are announced on Friday, March 12th

Prizes

  • 1st place logos receives a $20 gift card to the Lute Locker
  • 2nd place logos receives a $10 gift card to the Lute Locker
  • 3rd place logos receives a $5 gift card to the Lute Locker
