Rieke Weekie Contests

For the third year in a row, the Division of Natural Sciences invites you to participate in a contest for Rieke Weekie. This year, we’re actually holding two contests!

(1) Slug Art Contest: With our March 2022 Rachel Carson lecture on biomimicry, we’ve been thinking a lot about how nature influences design. So, we’re looking to our beloved Rieke mascot, Enrieké the slug, to inspire this year’s Rieke art contest. That’s right: visual art inspired by or celebrating slugs! Rules:

    • You don’t have to be a Natural Sciences major to enter, but you must be an enrolled PLU student.
    • Each student may only enter twice.
    • Artwork can consist of any visual medium, including photographs, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, or crafts. Photos, drawings, etc. do not have to be submitted with a frame. If your artwork is selected as a finalist, we’ll provide the frame.
    • We cannot accept audio or video submissions.
    • When you drop off your artwork, you must complete a short form which includes your name, PLU email address, major, anticipated year of graduation, and the title of your artwork (if it has a title).
    • Artwork must be delivered to the Rieke Admin Office, room 158, no later than Monday, November 15th at 9am.

(2) Book Nook Naming Contest: Rieke is getting a book nook as part of the lobby/study area remodel. The nook will be filled with a collection of science-themed books for you to borrow. We think this nook needs a good name – something creative or fun or silly – and are hoping you can come up with the perfect name for this space. Rules:

    • You don’t have to be a Natural Sciences major to enter, but you must be an enrolled PLU student who has taken (or is currently taking) a Natural Sciences class (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Data Sciences, Environmental Studies, Geosciences, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics).
    • Each student may only enter twice.
    • Creative or fun names are encouraged. Please no offensive language.
    • Entries must be submitted via the online form by November 15th at 9am. Submit here.

Voting

The PLU community (students, faculty, staff, alums) will vote on the slug art and book nook name. Artwork will be displayed for voting in the Rieke Lobby glass cases during Rieke Weekie. Voting for the book nook name will take place online during Rieke Weekie. The top three slug artworks will remain on display in the Rieke Lobby’s glass cases and be highlighted on our social media. The book nook name will appear on the nook once it’s installed. All winners receive prizes.
